Marketing 101: Be a Volunteer

By Bette Daoust, Ph.D. Being available and being a volunteer have only one thing in common. They both require some of your time. You need to look at each request for your time to determine how you can best help. If you are too booked, you will not be able to avail yourself for any outside advice. Your calendar needs to include small snippets of time when you can be available; this will give you the flexibility to move some things around to accommodate the customer. Personally, I always leave Friday afternoons open. If a customer needs to have me on site Thursday afternoon and it is unexpected, I can move my Thursday work to that time slot. If nothing comes up during the week, I simply take some of my work load for the next week and get it done early. Invariably your time will get filled even if there is nothing scheduled. Volunteering to help a customer may not involve helping them with their projects. It may be that they are putting on an event that will bring other potential customers. These events could be such things as seminars, symposiums, or training programs. If they want your help, simply ask what they would like you to do. It may be that they want you as one of the speakers for the event or to put them in contact with an event planner you have used in the past. Always ask first and then make your decision. The biggest issue with being a volunteer is the balancing act you must perform to keep all of your projects on time and on schedule. Do not spread yourself too thin, keep on top of your calendar at all times. Bette Daoust, Ph.D. is a speaker, author (over 170 books, articles, and publications), and consultant.
