Build your Trade Show - Virtually

Saturday, September 29th, 2007

By Jeanette S Cates, PhD Virtual trade shows are gaining momentum as a way to encourage participation in the event - both live and online. Here are a few ideas to help you expand your trade show - virtually. 1.Provide a map of the show floor that matches the live show. Link each booth on the map to the vendor’s virtual booth. 2.Have each online show visitor register. Give them an ID number to make it easy to request more information from the vendors online, rather than having to fill out forms at each virtual booth. 3.Let visitors search at least three ways: company name, booth number, or type of products. 4.Have the grand opening of your virtual trade show at least 2 weeks before the conference. 5.Encourage each vendor to offer a “show special” that is featured on their trade show page. 6.Offer coupons booth that online visitors can print and bring to the live show. As the organizer, you should plan to offer special coupons online as well. Consider a free drink coupon or a special souvenir of the conference, only available with the coupon. 7.Provide online stations in the exhibit area so that live visitors can visit the online trade show. Provide a printer to print coupons or number the coupons so that they can bring the number to the booth for the “special” discount. 8.Use a digital camera at the live show to take a picture of each booth. Add the photos to the vendors’ pages for after-the-show identification. 9.Leave the show online for at least three months after the live show so that attendees can follow up. Consider a year-round show with vendors who sign up for next year’s live show participating all year long for a reduced fee. 10.Offer a virtual booth only fee to vendors who cannot be at the live show. Price it accordingly. 11.Include a means for vendors to create their virtual booth at your site. A full booth might include a Front Page, a Back Wall, Right and Left Sides, plus a page for specials. As an alternative, a lesser fee could provide just a Front Page with a link to their site. 12.Open links to vendors’ company sites in a new window. That way you don’t lose the traffic. Once they close the other window your site is still in the background waiting to be seen again. Successful Newsletter Publishing: Keep Your Focus on What Matters

Thursday, September 27th, 2007

By Jessica Albon The other day, I was having an email conversation with a friend about business goals. She mentioned that she’d started a book only to realize she didn’t want to write one *right now* after all. She had mixed feelings about the decision, though. After all, *everyone* says a good consultant *must* write a book. And she was feeling the pressure. In a reply email, I offered her a piece of advice that, as soon as I’d typed it, I knew was really advice for *me* and not her. Have you ever had that happen? You’re talking with someone and you hear yourself making a suggestion that you realize (on the spot or later on) is exactly what *you* needed to hear? This final newsletter ingredient continues to be the hardest for me–I grapple with it in nearly every issue. See, persistence, and staying the course with your newsletter, is all about keeping your focus on the things that matter. Not letting yourself get distracted by all those *other* great ideas. The sections you *could* add to your newsletter. The design changes you *could* make. The requests and reviews and … that *might* be good to include. I find myself going around in circles some weeks–not wanting to start the newsletter, and yet being on a deadline and *needing* to start the newsletter. And, each time I get caught in this circle, the solution is consistently the same. Yet, it often takes me several hours to *realize* that I know how to resolve my procrastination. For me, what works most often is to STOP what I’m doing (surfing the Internet for ideas, reading someone else’s book or newsletter, asking someone else what they think I should write about, reviewing back issues) and to simply SIT for a few minutes. I know that’s the solution. And I know it works 9 times out of 10. And yet, I still find myself unwilling to apply it at the first sign of distress. Then again, I’m the same way about taking medicine ;-). I have to get really, really, really sick before I even think of taking something. So often, we think of persistence as working harder, as pushing through it, as forcing ourselves to buckle down and “get it done.” And there’s value to that. But, in this case, I’m speaking of persistence as more of a willingness to repeat those actions you already *know* work for you. So, if you know that a plain text newsletter format works best for you, don’t let yourself wonder if you should publish in HTML every few months. If you know your readers respond best when you talk about your dog, don’t listen to that consultant who tells you to be more buttoned up. By persistence, I’m asking you to commit to blazing your own trail–doing things your own way. Persist in that. And don’t worry about what everyone says, or what works for everyone else. P.S. If you find a magical formula for this kind of persistence, I’m all ears ;-). Your challenge: Today apply that piece of advice you find yourself repeating, but *never* applying in your own newsletter. Celebrate your fabulous business with a compelling newsletter. Fast Weight Loss Diet Plan - Turbo Charge Your Weight Loss With These Tips

Wednesday, September 26th, 2007

By Nick Andrade Most people realize that in order to achieve certain fitness-oriented goals, they will need to pay special attention to what they are eating. As simple as this seems, it is often one of the most confusing aspects of a fitness plan. I mean what fad diet are we going to try this week? Adkins, South Beach and the hard to kill Cabbage Soup Diet are a few of the more popular fad diets making the rounds these days. Now dont get me wrong, not all of these diets are totally useless, but overall, fad diets are responsible for some very unhealthy habits. Not to mention the fact that the majority of all dieters fad and otherwise, will ultimately gain all of the weight back! Some will even gain more weight back than what they started with. Hopefully after reading this article, you will understand the basics of nutrition and realize just how simple creating an effective and healthy nutritional plan can be. In order to get started, you will need to arm yourself with a few things. Grab a pen, some paper, a calculator and a scale. First, we will need to define your goals. What do you want to achieve from this program? Do you want to lose 20lbs, 50lbs or even 100lbs? Do you want to gain 20, 50 or 100 lbs? It really doesnt matter how crazy your goals may seem now. I assure you that if given the proper amount of time, any goal is within your reach! Just write down the first few things that come to your mind. Next to each one of your goals, write what your motivation for attaining them is? Maybe you want to look good for a wedding. Or perhaps you have been ordered by a doctor to loose weight or else! Now I realize that this may seem like a very unimportant part of the equation, but I speak from experience when I say, no goal will ever be achieved unless you can understand exactly why it is important to you. Nobody else needs to know what makes you tick, but in order for you to achieve success at anything in life, you must master this step. Nutrition 101 Now that youre on the track to success, you will need to learn what components make up a successful nutritional plan. Bear with me as I explain the basics of nutrition. Everything that you eat is made up of calories. Calories are fuel for the body. Calories are responsible for providing fuel for the body to do everything from basic body functions to more advanced functions like muscle contraction and exercise. So basically, calories are energy. It is extremely important to be able to accurately estimate your bodys caloric needs. BMR The most accurate method for estimating your caloric needs is a simple equation involving your estimated body fat % and estimated activity level. This equation will lead you to your BMR or basal metabolic rate. The value that you get for your BMR can be use to calculate your Total Daily Expended Energy. Basically, your total daily expended energy is the amount of fuel, (calories), needed to maintain the weight that you are currently at, at the body composition that you are currently at. In order to lose weight, you must create a calorie deficit. In order to gain weight, you must increase your total caloric intake. Very simple, straight-forward stuff. Now you have a place to begin. You will no longer be guessing at how many calories you have to eat. You can calculate exactly how many your body needs and adjust from there. In order to calculate you basal metabolic rate and your total daily expended energy, simply plug in your estimated % body fat and lean body mass in kg, into the Katch-Mcardle formula. BMR = 370+(21.6 x Lean Body Mass kg) Now select your estimated activity multiplier from the table below. Activity Muiltipliers Sedentary = BMR X 1.2 (little or no exercise, desk job) Lightly active = BMR X 1.375 (light exercise/sports 1-3 days/wk) Mod. active = BMR X 1.55 (moderate exercise/sports 3-5 days/wk) Very active = BMR X 1.725 (hard exercise/sports 6-7 days/wk) Extra active = BMR X 1.9 (hard daily exercise/sports & physical job or 2X day training, i.e marathon, contest etc.) After you have established your BMR and selected you activity multiplier from the chart above, simply multiply your activity multiplier by your BMR. This value is your total daily expended energy. From here, you will need to apply a little bit of skill in order to adjust your value to achieve your goals. For most people, if your goal is to lose weight, you will need to adjust you caloric intake down from the TDEE value somewhere between 5 and 20%. If your goal is to gain muscle mass, then you will need to gradually increase your caloric intake. Again I would recommend making any changes to your TDEE value gradually. Generally speaking, an increase of 5-25% is typically a good place to start. Before we go any further, it is critical that you realize a few important functions of the human body. The more fuel you eat, (calories), the more energy your body will be able to expend. The human body is a very complex organism. You must eat the right amount of calories to fuel your daily activity or your body, as clever as it is, will begin to store as many of the calories that you eat as body fat. This is not what you are looking for, unless you see a future in sumo wrestling down the road. So, what really happens when your caloric intake is too low? Your body, going back to the prehistoric days will revert to the flight or fight mode. Not knowing when its next meal will come, your body will attempt to store any and all of your calories as body fat for future use, after all it may not eat again for days. This is one of the basic reasons that starvation diets rarely work. Not only will you more than likely gain weight, but your body will begin to canabolize itself and try to turn protein (muscle mass), into energy. This conversion process is one of the most inefficient ways for your body to generate energy. You in turn, will feel the effects of this inefficiency as you begin to feel groggy and tired all of the time. To put it bluntly, you will lose muscle mass and gain body fat at the same time. Now, back to the basic nutrition lesson. As we are all aware by now, calories are the fuel for the body. You probably realize that calories come from food, but lets take it a little bit further and explain what types of food contain what types of calories. There are six basic nutrient classes. Protein, Carbohydrate, Fat, Vitamins, Minerals and Water. Each nutrient is utilized in the human body for very specific tasks. The body as amazing as it is, will often try to manipulate certain types of responses from these nutrients in order to sustain life, especially when incorrect proportions of nutrients are consumed. Protein Protein serves numerous functions in our bodies. It is the major structural component of the cell. It is also used for growth, repair and maintenance of body tissues. Another important function that protein plays in the body is the ability to form antibodies for disease protection. And as stated previously, protein can be used to create energy, although not very efficiently. Protein contains 4 calories per gram. Although there are many benefits to consuming protein, especially for bodybuilders and people wishing to increase lean body mass, it is important to realize that protein is only a piece of the nutrition puzzle. Only paying attention to your protein intake and neglecting other areas of your nutritional plan, will guarantee that you will not achieve your fitness goals. Carbohydrates Carbohydrates also serve many functions in the human body. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for the human body, especially during high-intensity exercise. Carbohydrates regulate fat and protein metabolism, as well as providing the exclusive energy source for the nervous system. Carbohydrates, like protein contain 4 calories per gram. Fats Fats are responsible for maintaining proper brain function as well as supplying energy to the body. The main responsibility of fats in the human body is to provide a constant supply of energy. Because the body must be prepared for times when energy consumption is minimal, the human body tends to place a supply of fat on the body for later use. This is also why it can be difficult to lose body fat after it has been stored there. When you try to lose fat, you are actually working against your bodies instincts. Dietary fats have taken a bad rap in recent years due to the amount of publicity given to obesity and heart disease. The most important thing to remember here, is that saturated fats and trans-fatty acids are bad for the body and unsaturated fats can be good for the body. Saturated fats come primarily from animal sources. Saturated fats are responsible for clogging arteries, elevating cholesterol and a slew of undesirable side effects. Saturated fats come primarily from meats and manufactured and processed foods. Polyunsaturated and Monounsaturated fats, “healthy fats”, come from sources such as flaxseed, safflower, grapeseed and olive oils. Polyunsatuated fats serve as the building blocks from which cells are produced. It is important to consume an adequate amount of these “healthy” fats for proper bodily function. Healthy or unhealthy, each gram of fat contains 9 calories. As you can see, fats are the most calorie dense nutrient, more than doubling up on carbohydrates and protein. Because of this, it is important to not only limit your consumption of fats to avoid an excess of calories, but also to make sure to eat primarily “healthy” types of fats. Vitamins and Minerals Vitamins and minerals are often overlooked components of any nutritional plan. Vitamins are responsible for promoting growth and maintaining health. Minerals are essential for normal cellular function. Together vitamins and minerals create an environment primed for optimum performance. Although not very exotic, vitamins and mineral supplements, when consistently taken, can bolster your immune system, increase your energy levels and promote overall body function and health. I personally do not believe that you need to break the bank here, when looking for a good vitamin/ mineral supplement. Many excellent vitamin/mineral supplements are on the market today for a fraction of what they would have cost you 5-10 years ago. Water Water is the last of the six nutrient classes discussed here, but certainly not the least. Water, makes up roughly 60% of the human body. Do I really need to explain any further? Water serves as the lubricant by which body function is driven. With out enough water, you will die. At the very least, without consuming enough water throughout the day, you will certainly not be able to reach your fitness/ health goals. It is recommended that training athletes consume a minimum of 24 oz of water per hour of exercise. Regardless of your goals, I personally believe that a minimum of 1 gallon of water per day should be the goal. Conclusion Hopefully, you have gained a better understanding of the important role that nutrition plays in achieving your fitness goals. You simply can’t neglect this area of your program, without consequences. To briefly recap, establish your maintenance calorie needs. After you have established this value, take a look at your goals. If your goal is to lose weight, realize that you must create a calorie deficit. You will need to expend more energy than you are consuming. The only two ways to accomplish this are to increase you activity levels via cardiovascular exercise to burn more calories, or to eat fewer calories. If your goal is to gain weight, you will need to increase your caloric intake. Typically, you will want to continue to live an active life, including cardiovascular exercise. In order to increase this value enough to see a measurable difference, you will need to gradually increase your caloric intake over time. Typically 500 to 1000 extra calories per day, should get you headed in the right direction. If you are happy with where you currently are, simply eat enough calories to match your maintenance level. Wedding Vows - From Traditional Wedding Vows To Funny Wedding Vows, A How To Guide

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

By Thomas Morton There are many different kinds of wedding vows to recite at your upcoming celebration. For those of us who are searching online for wedding vows, you are most likely interested in writing them or at least finding good vows to copy. You can find dozens of great examples online, from traditional to funny wedding vows. Now you have to choose what type of vow you are going to use. Traditional wedding vows are like an old song, and some might say they’re a little boring, but traditional wedding vows are timeless, simple and perfect for any couple. Attendees will take comfort in the classic recitations as well make those who are already married remember back to when they too were reciting the exact same lines. But it’s true too that traditional wedding vows can seem stale to modern brides and grooms. The words are too formal, submissive and serious. Using funny wedding vows can lighten the mood and still can convey the seriousness of your intentions. It’s been said that the best way to your lover’s heart is through laughter. Make them laugh and you will enjoy many fun years ahead. But how do you go about writing these wedding vows, you ask. It can be very difficult to find the words, but there are some guidelines that might help you write your own vows. First write down as many reasons on a sheet of paper, “Why I love (FUTURE SPOUSE)”. Now write down as many funny things about your relationship that you can think of. Now write down any quirky little habits or aspects about your future spouse that you can think of, and why you love them more because of it. Finally, write down what you are prepared to offer your future spouse today, tomorrow, and when you are both 90 and gray haired. Once you have this list of ideas, start to join them into sentences. You will find that you have just created a very thoughtful wedding vow. Good Luck! For more information on traditional wedding vows or funny wedding vows, see our free wedding vows at AllAboutDiamonds.org. We wish you the best of luck in the future! Utilizing Technical Resources in Candidate Recruiting

Sunday, September 23rd, 2007

By Kate Fiorvante Lets face it: we all remember our first home computer–it wasnt that long ago. My dad brought home one of his old computers from work; the screen was approximately 8 x 8 inches, and it was certainly not the flat screens we see today. Behind the screen, Im certain there were mice running in wheelsthere was definitely enough space for them and the speed of that computer was slower than it takes to make Thanksgiving dinner. We used it initially as a word processor and could never imagine that our computer would change so much in the next 15 years. Now think back to your first cell phone. Mine was shaped like (and probably weighed as much as) a brick. It did not fold, the antenna had to be extended to even dream about hearing the other person who was calling, it was used only for emergencies and the rates of one or two phone calls were more than any of us ever wanted to pay for a simple call home to Mom and Dad. Fast forward to 2006. Every other persons hand we pass has a computer the size of their palm that connects wirelessly to the internet, takes and stores hundreds of photographs and sends instant text messages to any colleague or friend holding a similar device (not to mention rings when they have a call, lest we forget). These elaborate extensions of computers and telephones have made most of us accessible at any hour of the day, any place in the world. We all need an answer right now, dont we? There are so many new and innovative ways to reach candidates that most recruiters have not even begun to take advantage of. Working as the recruitment manager for a retained search firm, we brainstorm weekly about how to reach candidates efficiently and cost effectively. One of the ideas we began incorporating last week is text messaging via cell phone to potential candidates. The majority of resumes that come across my desk have the candidates cell number on it: practically all cells are capable of receiving a text message. And as Im sure youve experienced, each individual candidate prefer a certain way of communication. Some will pick up their phone and call you to return your voicemail. Some will reply to the email you sent them. And some will certainly take a minute to text a message back saying: lets talk today at 2. Why not add this small and easy technique to your tool bag? Furthermore, we send the text messages for free through Yahoo Instant Messenger which doesnt cost us a thing. Time efficient? Check! Cost effective? You bet! As a recruiter did you ever think you could have access to a network of millions people at your fingertips? Thats one of the values of a using a recruiter: being able to tap into their network. Ive found a way to reach AT LEAST that many people through my MySpace.com account. If youre not familiar with MySpace, I highly suggest you log on and check it out. Its the largest group of people in one place on the internet today and best of all, its free. After some initial skepticism (I thought it was just another chat room), I discovered that its being widely used by professionals across the globe in all different industries. I only have a few dozen friends in my cache (other individuals with profiles with whom I have made a connection) but the accessible network contains 88 million+ people. For instance, there is a group for Registered Nurses to connect and network. What a great group to post a topic for the healthcare group to read that says: Any good RNs looking for a new job in northern NJ? Not to mention, once youre a member you can search for anyone. Is there something about a particular candidate that doesnt sit well with you? Theres a decent chance he or she has a MySpace.com account that will give you some more insight into their personality. The information, tools and resources are out there, we just have to finding new ways to put them to use. Making New Friends All Your Life

Friday, September 21st, 2007

By Michael Brickey, Ph.D. The Girl Scouts have a song that goes, Make new friends and keep the old. One is silver and the other gold. It is great advice. What typically happens as people age is that their circle of friends shrinks as people move, develop different interests, or die. Cant you just feel life closing in when you think about it? Not making new friends is choosing to coast in life instead of embracing life. It is a script for premature aging. Try on this belief: I make new friends all my lifeeven when I am well into my hundreds. Notice how time and space open up? When you adopt this belief you tell your mind to develop a script to fulfill it. To make sure the belief sticks, look for examples of people who are always making new friends. They can be great role models. If you are shy, set a goal of learning how to make friends comfortably. Perhaps you can identify some shy people who has a knack for making friends and see how they do it. Another strategy is to become involved in organizations in which it is easy to make friends. If you are willing to take a leadership role in an organization making friends is even easier. Why do women live longer than men? One factor is that, on the whole, they are better at developing friendships and social networks than men. Michael Roizens Real Age statistics found that a 70-year-old man who is married, sees at least six friends monthly, and participates in social groups has a life expectancy ten years longer than a man with none of the characteristics. For women the difference is eight years. Marriage was a more important factor in life expectancy of men than of womenpresumably because single women, on the whole, have more friends and those friends provide more emotional support. And Roizens research isnt even looking at whether the marriages are happy marriages. The key factor that typically moves an acquaintanceship to a friendship is self-disclosure and sharing. Keeping your cards close to your chest is a prescription for loneliness. If you want to make friends, go ahead and be the first one to share personal feelings or information. What do you have to lose. At this point they are only an acquaintance and if they are turned off or scared off by you telling them that the person you would most like to meet is Richard Simons, then they wouldnt have made a very good friend for you anyway. The rule of thirds says a third of people naturally like you, a third wont, and a third will be apathetic. (Of course there are few exceptions for charismatic people and curmudgeons.) So you may as well be yourself and the people who will like you will like you for the real you. The only way to lose is to not play. So make new friends like your life depends on it. It does. Cosmetic Procedures Accepted as A Social Need

Wednesday, September 19th, 2007

By Evie Lampard According to British statistics, more than 100,000 cosmetic procedures are performed every year. Among these procedures we can find Botox injections for remove wrinkles as well as laser peels to improve the appearance of skin. Anti aging procedures such as facelifts, brow lifts and eyelid surgery become very popular due their acceptability. As a very interesting fact, statistics mention a growing number of men taking the decision to go under cosmetic knife. From professional need to look pleasant to self-esteem reasons, men have finally received the societal permission to have cosmetic procedures. Men have the money and the desire to have a young appearance. Among male patients, rhinoplasty - the nose correction procedure - is the most popular cosmetic surgery. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons, evaluates that in 2005 year more patients improved their quality of life and self-esteem through their looks using the right circumstance of aesthetic surgery. Experts explain this growing demand by the fact more and more people access information regarding what cosmetic surgery might achieve. On the other hand, statistics shows a growing trend in demand of less-invasive procedures and often less costly than surgery, such as laser hair removal and anti-cellulite treatments. Cerebral Palsy Support Group - Learn to Care and Desire to Share

Tuesday, September 18th, 2007

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Low_Jeremy] Low Jeremy Cerebral palsy can attack anybody regardless of age and status in life. This is why many people have seen this situation as a catalyst for many people to participate in movements and associations that advocate assistance to people with cerebral palsy. It is the right time for everyone to learn about caring, sharing and reaching out. United Cerebral Palsy Associations, Inc or the UCPA was established for the general welfare of the cerebral patients. This supports the affiliates from various localities that do some programs for parents, adults and children with cerebral palsy. This national association has a total number of groups that has reached as high as 140 affiliates. Its primary undertaking is to create linkage from an individual to a concerned group for promoting proper information dissemination regarding the necessary treatments and therapies that should be done for the patients. The task for searching a support group for the said concern is made easier through the Internet. You can start by connecting to the website of the UCPA where you can derive your connection to a certain group that you think can help you. You can also get referrals from your families or friends doctors to give you the basic information about cerebral palsy first. Most of them also know some support groups that are holding responsibility over the needs of the patients. You can begin with the local support groups and connect to the higher level once acknowledged. Since medical specialists are exposed to various people with different situations, they are more probably familiar about the extensive support groups for cerebral palsy patients. The United Cerebral Palsy Associations has a wide-ranging website comprised of bulk of information. You can have your access to the site by just typing its address in your desktop. This will be a great tool for you in answering your major queries. Most of the state branches and affiliates also have their specified websites. You will find it more helpful because it has links and reference information. But aside from the UCPA, there are countless of others in the Internet that can be found. Just typing Cerebral Palsy Support Group in a search engine will provide a great number of sites you can go to. There you can be able to ask your questions in the forums and they can provide you with the answers. Organising a Great First Date in the UK After Meeting Someone Special Online

Sunday, September 16th, 2007

By Ivor Conway Let’s not make any bones about it the first date after meeting someone online is always a difficult thing! Feeling nervous. Good because that is perfectly normal. Feeling excited. You should be, this could be the start of something great! Where to go? We think that lunchtimes at the weekends or straight after work/college during the week are the best times for a first date. A quick drink somewhere close-by will mean that you have the chance to learn a little more from your date and they can learn a little more about you! Decide to eat after you have met. Getting gravy stains down your shirt can be off-putting on the first date so see how you go with regard to food. Also meals tend to be longish affairs and if things are not going well it is more difficult to leave a meal that it is a quick drink. Keep it simple. Does anyone really want to go salsa dancing or sky diving on a first date? Good first dates usually lead into fantastic second dates so do not try to pack everything into your first meeting. Be yourself on the first date and things will be fine. Feeling nervous, then say so. You can bet your bottom dollar that your date is feeling the same and it will break the ice. Talk a little about yourself, what you enjoy doing and then listen to what your date has to say. Communication, as your mother keeps telling you, is a two way thing! Take time to understand what your date has to say for themselves and if you are unsure about what they have said, ask them to explain. People love to talk about themselves in general so make sure that you allow them to speak whilst having time to put in your ten pence worth. It all goes well, fantastic. If not take the following lesson to heart. If everyone met their true love on the first date that they ever went on, we would all be married at sixteen and this article would be about raising babies. Dating is about meeting people having fun and moving on if that particular person isn’t right for you. Expect some average dates and even some poor ones. Expect to meet people that you fancy but who ask not to see you again. It’s difficult I know but not everyone is going to fancy you as much as you fancy them. People are different and that is a great thing. It can also be a bit of a downer when you get yourself all excited for a date and it doesn’t go as well as planned. Don’t lose heart. Put it down to experience and if you have followed our advice and only arranged to meet for a quick drink close by, then what have you lost, an hour or two and the cost of a drink. For every frog there is a prince. Believe us. To keep the magic alive we would recommend limiting the number of first dates that you go on each week. Dating can be exhausting and you can quickly become jaded. Save yourself so someone special rather than meeting up with every Tom, Dick or Harriet! Making That First Meeting A Safe One Dating people you meet on the internet is as safe as dating people you meet at work, in the pub or at a club. We all need to look after ourselves so please just bear the following tips in mind and stay safe when meeting someone new. This applies to men as well as women! When you make the choice to meet someone off-line, always tell someone where you are going and when you will return. Leave your date’s name and telephone number with someone that you can trust. Bring your mobile phone with emergency numbers stored in it. Never arrange for your date to pick you up at home instead make your own way to the date. Meet in a public place at a time when many people are present, and when the date is over, leave on your own as well.Make sure that you car is nearby or that your route home on public transport is well timetabled and reliable. If youre nervous, double date with friends to take some of the pressure off. A good date will understand.Avoid dates that involve being away from other people like walks in the countryside, bike rides or drives to remote areas for the first few dates at least. If you decide to move to another location, take your own car or grab a taxi. When the timing is appropriate, thank your date for getting together and say goodbye and go home alone. On the first date at least.Have A Back-Up Plan If things are not going well, and sometimes they will not, have a back-up plan. Call someone you trust and get them to come and collect you or get them to call you so that you have an excuse to leave. If things have gone wrong on the date and you are uncomfortable with your date let someone know like the restaurant manager, the barman, a fellow dinner or even call the police .It’s always better to be safe than sorry. Never worry or feel embarrassed about your behaviour. Your safety is much more important than one person’s opinion of you. There are lots of online services which give you a safe and secure environment to date online. While liars, cheaters and imposters certainly play their craft on the Web, you’ll also find them in nightclubs, among the membership ranks of off-line dating services, at cocktail parties and occasionally sitting across from you at your local caf. Regardless of where, or how, you meet someone, dating is never a risk-free activity. A little caution will reduce your risk in these matters of the heart. Drinking Youll probably be nervous before a first date. Though a few drinks could help loosen you up, dont overdo it. Youll need to have a clear head if things don’t go to plan. Never leave your drink unattended or drink anything that has an unusual taste. And being a drunken mess is not a great way to impress a new boyfriend or girlfriend. Ending the Date If you don’t wish to see your date again, be honest and tell them firmly in a considerate way. Remember you are in control. It is your responsibility who you contact and who you don’t. Don’t put yourself at risk and trust your instincts. However if you continue to receive messages after you say “no” to further contact, you should report that member to the site administrator where you met online and document all further attempts to contact you carefully. Our last tip is to enjoy yourself! Have fun, be safe and we hope that you meet the partner of your dreams soon! Walking the Thin Line

By Terry Coyier Impulsivity thats how this all started. I ran across it as a symptom of bipolar somewhere in my endless hours of research. It was an exact fit for much of my behavior, thus peaking my interest. Some of the forms it takes are impatience, risk taking, spur of the moment thinking, underestimated sense of harm, extraversion, sensation and pleasure seeking, rapid decision making and the inability to resist temptations and the expression of it in an inappropriate environment. This definitely sounded like me. Well, my impulsivity research has lead to more information on borderline personality disorder (BPD) than anything else. So, since I found that BPD is often comorbid with bipolar, I thought I might as well share what I discovered. DIAGNOSIS BPD usually surfaces in the early twenties, but like anything there are no hard and fast rules. A continual pattern of unstable interpersonal relationships, poor self-image, impulsivity, anger and fear of abandonment are the hallmarks of this disorder. Unfortunately common symptoms occur in mood disorders, schizotypal personality disorders, paranoid personality disorder, ADHD and a host of others. It is estimated that nearly 6 million Americans suffer from BPD. To be classified as BPD, the DSM-IV states that you must meet five or more of the following criteria: 1. Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment 2. A pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships 3. Identity disturbance markedly and persistently unstable self-image or sense of self 4. Impulsivity in at least two areas that are potentially self damaging: *Spending *Sex *Substance abuse *Gambling *Reckless driving *Binge eating 5. Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures or threats or self mutilating behavior 6. Affective instability due to marked reactivity of mood 7. Chronic feelings of emptiness 8. Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger 9. Transient, stress related, paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms Associated features include a depressed mood, addiction or dramatic/erratic antisocial personality. Some suffer from transient psychotic-like symptoms (e.g. hearing their name being called) during times of stress. People with BPD may undermine their own goals by sabotaging themselves right before nearing the completion of the goal. Many feel more secure with transitional objects (e.g. pet or inanimate objects) than they do having interpersonal relationships. Despite the continuum of relationship problems they have, they may deny that they are the problem. In fact, often they blame others for their difficulties. The following is a list of feelings and behaviors that are common among people with BPD: Affect * Helplessness or hopelessness or worthlessness * Guilt * Shame * Anger (including frequent expressions of anger) * Anxiety * Chronic/episodic depression * Loneliness * Boredom * Emptiness Cognition * Odd thinking * Unusual perceptions * Non-delusional paranoia * Quasi-psychosis Impulse Action Patterns * Substance abuse/dependence * Sexual deviance * Manipulative suicide gestures/self-mutilation * Other impulsive behavior (gambling, reckless driving, binge eating) Interpersonal Relationships * Intolerance of aloneness * Abandonment, engulfment, annihilation fears * Counter dependency * Stormy relationships * Manipulative * Dependency * Devaluation * Masochism/sadism * Demanding * Entitlement STATISTICS Common Childhood Histories of People with BPD * Physical Abuse * Sexual Abuse (40-70%) * Neglect * Hostile Conflict * Early Parental Loss or Separation General Information * BPD occurs in an estimated 2% of the population * People with BPD comprise nearly 10% of the patients seen in out-patient clinics * 15-20% of in-patient admissions are for BPD * Sufferers of BPD comprise 30-60% of the clinical population with personality disorders * 3:1 ratio of women to men who have BPD * 69-75% of BPD sufferers resort to self mutilation Miscellaneous * 3-10% of completed suicides are by people with BPD (50 times higher than the general population * Difficulty with academic, occupational or role functioning. People suffering with BPD have trouble holding down jobs due to their behavior, especially anger or aggression. * Physical handicaps or scars Results from self-mutilating can cause embarrassment, shame and guilt thus causing the action to repeatedly cycle. * Social costs Only about 1/2 of BPD sufferers will have a stable job or marriage after attaining functional roles 10 - 15 years after being admitted to a psychiatric facility. * Medications and Therapy Recent studies do show a greater lifetime usage of most major categories of medications and of most types of psychotherapy than do patients with schizotypal, avoidant, OCD or patients with major depression. DIFFERENTIAL DIAGNOSIS A professional should always do a diagnosis of anything. And I mean ANYTHING. If your tree is losing its bark you call a specialist to figure out the problem. If you have problems with your physical health you go to a medical doctor. If you are having problems that are emotional or mental in nature you go to a psychologist or psychiatrist or both. This is not something to fool around with. Never try to self-diagnose or diagnose someone else. Articles, books and information on the Internet are simply meant to provide you with facts, ideas and options. They should be used to help you decide if maybe you need to see a professional. Remember, I’m not a doctor, I just play one on the Internet - so don’t take my information to be the absolute truth. The reason you want to see a professional is that lists of symptoms from any source, including the DSM-IV, are tools that they use along with special training to provide you with a correct diagnosis. In fact, it is so difficult a job to diagnose illnesses that many of us have been misdiagnosed or had our diagnosis changed as other symptoms presented themselves. This is because so much of the criteria for one illness may also be close to or the same as that of another illness. Also, a professional relies on what they see and what we tell them to make a diagnosis, and let’s face it, the mentally ill are not always forthcoming with their problems to someone they just met. Some people are never completely honest with their doctors and don’t realize they are only hurting themselves. Ok, enough preaching on my part, on to some examples. Features such as affective instability and impulsivity are criteria for BPD and bipolar disorder, Hopelessness and suicidal symptoms are major symptoms for BPD and also for clinical depression. It can be particularly difficult to differentiate between dysthymic disorder and BPD since the symptoms mimic each other. The major difference between these symptoms is the motivation behind them. With BPD interpersonal stressors such as rejection, abandonment, feelings of emptiness and self-condemnation trigger these symptoms. To give you an idea of how tough a psychiatrist’s job is let’s take one of the big symptoms of BPD - ANGER. Often it is referred to as “pathological aggression” and it is a symptom of the following illnesses: *Borderline Personality Disorder *Bipolar Disorder *AD/HD (ADD, ADHD) *Psychotic disorders *Dysthymia *Antisocial Personality Disorder *Major Depressive Disorder *Psychoactive substance intoxication and withdrawal *Pervasive developmental disorders *PTSD *PMDD *Intermittent Explosive Disorder *Kleptomania *Pyromania *Pathological gambling TREATMENTS The treatment for BPD is similar to that of most mental disorders medication and psychotherapy. As mentioned earlier, the sufferers of BPD show a high lifetime average of compliance with both of these treatments. Neuroleptics are particularly recommended for the psychotic symptoms and for patients who show anger, which must be controlled. Antipsychotics and antidepressants are used but should only be for short term use as needed to control symptoms. If BPD is comorbid with bipolar disorder then a mood stabilizer should be used as well. In fact, Depakote has been shown to diminish interpersonal sensitivity, anger, hostility and depression. Like all personality disorders, BPD is intrinsically difficult to treat. Besides basic cognitive behavior therapy a newer psychotherapy by Marsha Linehan has proven to be very effective. It is called Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and is quite intensive. It seeks to teach the client how to learn to better take control of their lives, their emotions, and themselves through self-knowledge, emotion regulation, and cognitive restructuring. Personality disorders, by definition, are long-standing ways of coping with the world, social and personal relationships, handling stress and emotions, etc. that often do not work, especially when a person is under increased stress or performance demands in their lives. Treatment, therefore, is also likely to be somewhat lengthy in duration, typically lasting at least a year for most. PERSONAL EXPERIENCES In an effort to understand the plight of the BPD sufferer, I read many personal stories. What I discovered is that a few common themes infiltrated most of them. First is the amount of pain that is held inside that seems to be completely unbearable by the person. By most accounts the pain is indescribably horrendous and there is a universal belief that no one could possibly understand the depth of it no matter how hard they tried. This leaves them feeling alone, left out, scared and empty. Many will withdraw within themselves, thus the cycle of losing the sense of self begins. Eventually many end up with no sense of who they really are as a person. This hurt is typically triggered because of a fight, falling out or disappointment with someone who is very close to them. When they decide to make a friend or have a lover, that person becomes the center of their world so any conflict is a terrifying situation. In turn, once they have rejected a person, that person no longer exists to them. During these conflicts someone with BPD can resort to tremendous acts of rage. Often they become violent or get into screaming matches with the person who has caused their pain. The black and white thinking that takes place in their mind makes it impossible to reason with them during these times. Their lashing out can be a way of controlling a situation and often they feel it is not the real them that is acting out. In other words, they dissociate or sometimes even split their personality. After these rages comes the overwhelming sense of guilt and shame. Without proper coping skills most will resort to some sort of self-harm. It seems to be the only way they can get the pain out of them even though it is a temporary solution and most seem to know that. An unusual paradox that takes place with BPD sufferers is the need to push loved ones away, yet most have a horrible fear of being left alone. They identify themselves in others and if left alone its as if they are nothing. This goes back to that loss of self and the inescapable pain they have trapped within. Most of this pain can be traced back to early childhood. Most of what I read mentioned childhood tragedies such as abandonment, emotional or physical abuse, sexual abuse or repeated rejection. Some of the stories brought me to tears thinking about what they had to endure and it helped me to understand why they push their true selves so far back that they dont know who they are anymore. Well, I found a lot more of myself in here than just the impulsivity that started the whole thing out. I identified with many other symptoms, especially the feelings of abandonment since my father left when I was 4 years old and I didnt see him again for 19 years. I am always afraid of men leaving me. Certainly those who know me also know that I have quite a temper and can rage over the slightest thing. But, I dont have BPD and I feel for those that do. It is my sincere hope that if you identify yourself in this article and think you may fit some of the criteria that you seek professional help. It can only make things better. And, even though you may feel like nothing and may feel worthless youre not. YOU ARE WORTH SOMETHING! Help yourself come into the light and out of the darkness of despair. Terry J.
