Friends - They Can Make You Or Break You

Saturday, September 15th, 2007

By Gabriel J. Adams Your life is profoundly influenced by outside sources. The shows you watch, the things you listen to and the people you hang out with have a big impact. The people you associate can either make you or break you in life. You may not believe that its very important. However, the people that you are around the most are your biggest influence. Most of us see a great number of people every day. Its well known that in every social situation there are groups. Think about where you work. You tend to hang out with people that have common interests with you. However, it may not be that simple. When you are constantly around the same people, your level of success strongly coincides with their level. This is a phenomenon that is present throughout the world. Even in the world of sports this happens quite frequently. The term playing to the level of the competition refers to how a team changes their style unconsciously. The better team will often play down to the level of the other team. The worst team will often play above themselves to match the competition. Not only does this happen in sports, but in everyday life. Study after study has proven this true. Take an underachiever in any field and place him/her with a successful group of people. After a very short period of time that person will also be a success. On the other hand, if you take a successful person and surround him/her with underachievers and he/she will also underachieve. It is an amazing phenomenon but it works nevertheless. What does this mean for you? Associate with the best people in your field. Quit hanging out with unsuccessful people even if they are your friends. Dont totally disown them by any meansjust dont hang out as often. The more you are around successful people, the more successful you will become. Sociological View on Family

Friday, September 14th, 2007

By Sharon White Definite and usage of main principles and notions is of the most important requirements set for sociological researches. The categories of family and marriage are the most complicated and hardest to define. First of all, traditions of usual conscience and word usage that are not always correspond to those of scientific and theoretical nature; have impact on their understanding and definition. Secondly, both marriage and family are studied not only by sociology but by a range of other sciences which creates many different approaches to them and accordingly more or less specific and abstract definition of these notions. The statement gives the initial impression that the concept of the family comes instinctively to any person that may come across it. The suggestion that the family is natural and a good thing instantly encourages one to think of the stereotypical image of a family, being that of a nuclear family, consisting of a female and a male assuming the roles of mother and father with their children as dependants. However the statement can be questioned in several ways. One example of this is what characterises a tendency? In this situation, a tendency can be interpreted as meaning leaning towards the definition of being natural and a good thing. Also, in what ways can the words natural and good thing be perceived? Most importantly the question that needs to be asked, what is the family? At this point, sociologists can intervene with the findings they have made in relation to the family. The definition of the family is perhaps the most difficult aspect of the whole question. There are various interpretations as to the definition of the family; there are also other issues to be discussed, such as the origins of the family, its functions, variations, the sociological perspectives of the family and the future it faces. This is one interpretation of a possible definition of the family, and although it can be considered to have considered all roles a family can assume, Muncie suggests that perhaps it is possible to differentiate between what can be considered as families and households. He initially describes the household as being, Whereas, in contrast to this, the family can be considered as being, Muncie maintains that thy two are not mutually exclusive, it is possible to have a family that may form a household. However, the definition can not be considered to be universal as it rules out the possibility of a gay or lesbian family, Muncie does give this issue some recognition. With relation to the way in which the family is perceived, it is often regarded by many sociologists as the cornerstone of society, it is also frequently described as the basic unit of social organisation. Generally, the family is an institution common to every known society and as such performs important functions for its members and for society as a whole. There are different sociological perspectives in relation to the family regarding its structure and what functions it performs for both the individual and society at large. Some sociologists see the family as a positive unit; others would disagree and prefer to highlight the negative aspects of the family, and some try to capture the middle ground, by examining both the positive and negative aspects. Occasionally, sociologists find reason to question the universality of the family unit; studies have been carried out on the Nayar society of Kerala in southern India prior to British rule. Fox said of these studies from the findings made, sociologists disagree about whether this society consisted of a family unit or not. Based on the descriptions made, the society was believed to be matrilineal. Although both male and female members were united in marriage and children were born, the father played no significant part in the running of the household, the socialisation of the children or in the economic needs of the family members. These factors were regarded the norm in the Najar society, some definitions of the family claim that although this failed to form a traditional family structure, it was indeed a family as a marriage had taken place and children were born as a result. Despite such conflict as to the possibility of the family unit not universally existing in one form or another, sociologists have formed perspectives based on families. The Functionalist perspective takes the view that the nuclear family is the norm and should be something to aspire to. Functionalists focus on the various parts of society, in this case being the family and look for them to relate to each other as so to maintain the stability or order of society as a whole. Murdock is one of the sociologists who has adopted this perspective.Murdock saw the family as the building block to a stable society, he emphasised the positive functions of the family, such as the sexual, reproductive, economic and educational (socialisation) functions, without these, social life would not be able to operate. Murdock believed that the functions for society are inseparable from its functions for its individual members, being that it serves both at the same time. Morgan also suggests that Murdock has an idealistic view of the family and in doing so fails to explore any alternatives, nor do they recognize that there may be a dysfunctional side to the family unit. He argues that Murdock sees the family as a harmonious institution and should any conflict occur it would be so insignificant that the benefits of family life out weigh any conflicting negative aspects. The interactions perspective of the family looks at the smaller-scale interaction between the individual members of the family unit. Unlike functionalists, interactionists are critical in their view of the family. They suggest that the family may be dysfunctional both for society and the individual members. Interactionist sociologists studying industrial families have found that the nuclear family tends to be isolated; this led to fighting amongst the family members and rebellion amongst the children, these points in turn effect society. The entire tension and hostility produced with in the family spill out and find expression throughout other aspects of society. Leach, an interactionist, is clearly negative in his views. To conclude, some functionalists would agree that the family is natural and a good thing, however, there are those that would disagree. Feminist perspectives in relation to the family are also quite critical, as they tend to emphasise the harmful effects of family life upon women. The main point made by feminists is that the family is an institution involving power relationships and hierarchies. They tend to highlight that some family members, in particular men, obtain greater benefits from families than others, in that a housewifes role is comparable to that of an employee but it comes at no cost to the employer. Furthermore it is suggested that construction of the family came about as a result of the inability to express sexuality. In terms of the historical origins of the family, it is suggested that, although the family structure can be considered to have existed pre-1890s. At this particular time, a heterosexual bourgeois family was deemed to be healthy, in which the needs of the women and children were met through dependency on the male. This form of family was considered to be above all moral health whilst structuring gender roles. The article was produced by the member of masterpapers.com. Attorney Marketing - The 6 Essential Traits You Need for Success

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

By Henry Harlow Attorney marketing is necessary for success at every law firm and becoming more necessary every day. Unfortunately, many attorneys feel that they do not have the traits, expertise or experience in lawyer marketing to launch a successful campaign. You may have felt overwhelmed by attorney marketing in the past or even now. Or maybe you think that you need some sort of extraordinary people skills, imagination and/or outstanding copywriting skills to be a great at lawyer marketing for your firm. Well, the good news is that you are wrong. There are essentially six traits that you must have to be a good at attorney marketing, and I think they will surprise you. The fact is that most marketing takes place with some tried and true methods over a period of time, rather than in stunning bursts of specialized skills all at once. Lawyer marketing is not an exact science, but it does require some initial ingredients to work well. So if you have the following traits or believe you can cultivate them, you are well on your way to becoming a great attorney marketing asset to your firm: * People Person. Have at least a low average interest in people rather than things. If you are a lawyer, you probably have at least a cursory interest in people. People buy people first then products and services. Prospects convert out of relationship and referral sources refer out of relationship first and all other reasons second. *Patience. Remember that most events in lawyer marketing happen over an extended period of time. Tested methods of attorney marketing usually require consistent, persistent and well-targeted action over time to get the desired results. You may think that you will launch a new campaign and get people beating down your door right away. And while this may happen occasionally, if you dont have the patience to wait for the real long-term results of your attorney marketing efforts, you will become frustrated and quit before you see the benefits of your labor. *Imagination. Now, most people think they are not creative. Or if they think of themselves as creative, they limit their abilities by placing them in certain categories. You might be a great poet but not a great artist. Or you might be good with words but have no idea how to arrange images in an advertisement. What you may forget is that everyone has some sort of imagination. The point isnt to come up with fantastic attorney marketing ideas that no one else has ever thought of, but instead to put yourself in your clients and referral sources shoes and see what you can do to satisfy their needs. That is the type of imagination you need. *Confidence. You need to be somewhat strong-willed when other people approach you about your attorney marketing ideas. You will certainly have critics; it happens to even the best marketers. So you need to be able to stand your ground and defend your decisions and stay the course until the data tells you otherwise. *Generosity. Having a what goes around comes around attitude toward lawyer marketing. Remember that what you give out in this world often will come back to you. When I give you something free or something that is added on to a service that you paid for, you are more likely to see me as someone on your side and come back to me in the future. You are more likely to make a profit if you are willing to give something away first. *Aggression. No, I dont mean a good right hook. What I mean by aggression is the quality of a willingness to compete. You can out-market your competition. Notice I did not say out spend your competition. If you are not willing to get out there and compete for the clients and referral sources that you want and deserve, you might as well not do attorney marketing focusing instead on being a legal technician. With these six qualities, the right information, and implementing that information attorney marketing becomes a breeze that will bring good clients in on a consistent basis and you will prosper. If you are missing one or two traits all is not lost. You can design a lawyer marketing plan that will work for you and over time you can develop the missing traits. So success is in reach for everyone is the good news. Henry Harlow has individually coached well over 500 attorneys on how to increase their revenues while they reduce their work hours. Being Save

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

By Mellody Davis The dictionary explains save as meaning; to rescue from danger, to preserve or safeguard, to store, and to spare. Just think for a minute, Jesus is saving us everyday! By the sword of the Spirit, the word of God. (Bible Knowledge.) Some might ask what are we being saved from? Well lets see what the Bible says about being save. Look at Isaiah 45:22 it says: Turn to me and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I am God, and there is no other. By myself I have sworn, my mouth has uttered in all integrity a word that will not be revoked: Before me every knee will bow; by me every tongue will swear. They will say of me, In the Lord alone are righteousness and strength. All who have rage against him will come to him and be put to shame. But in the Lord all the descendants of Israel will be found righteous and will exult. Look at Isaiah 65:24 it says: They will not toil in vain or bear children doomed to misfortune; for they will be a people blessed by the Lord, they and their descendants with them. Before they call I will answer; while they are still speaking I will hear. Now look at Jeremiah 33:2 it says: This what the Lord says, he who made the earth, the Lord who formed it and established itthe Lord is his name; Call to me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know. Look at Joel 2:29 it says Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billow of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord. And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the Lord has said, among the survivors whom the Lord calls. Look at Mark 16:16 it says; Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned. Look at Jon 10:2 it says; The man who enters by the gate is the shepherd of his sheep. The watchman opens the gate for him, and the sheep listen to his voice. He calls his own sheep by name and leads them out. When he has brought out all his own, he goes on ahead of them, and his sheep follow him because they know his voice. Look at Acts 4:11 it says He is the stone you builders rejected, which has become the capstone. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is not other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved. Look at Romans 9:27 it says; Isaiah cries out concerning Israel; Though the number of the Israelites be like the sand by the sea, only the remnant will be saved. For the Lord will carry out his sentence on earth with speed and finality. Now look at Romans 10:9 it says; That if you confess with your mouth, Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved. As the Scripture says, Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame. For there is no difference between Jew and Gentilethe same Lord is Lord of all and richly blesses all who call on him, for, Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. Now look at Romans 11:28 it says; As far as the gospel is concerned, they are enemies on your account; but as far as election is concerned they are loved on account of the patriarchs, for Gods gifts and his call are irrevocable. Just as you who were at one time disobedient to God have now received mercy as a result of their disobedience, so they too have now become disobedient in order that they too may now receive mercy as a result of Gods mercy to you. For God has bound all men over to disobedience so that he may have mercy on them all. Look at 1Corinthians 15:3 it says; For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance; that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures, and that he appeared to Peter, and then to the Twelve. After that, he appeared to more than five hundred of the brothers at the same time, most of whom are still living, though some have fallen asleep. Then he appeared to James, then to all the apostles, and last of all he appeared to me also, as to one abnormally born. Now look at 1Corinthians 15:33 it says; Do not be misled; Bad company corrupts good character. Come back to your senses as you ought, and stop sinning; for there are some who are ignorant of GodI say this to your shame. Look at Galatians 5:13 it says; You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. The entire law is summed up in a single command. Love your neighbor as yourself. If you keep on biting and devouring each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other. Look at Ephesians 2:4 it says; But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressionsit is by grace you have been saved. And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus, in order that in the coming ages he might show the incomparable riches of his grace, expressed in his kindness to us in Christ Jesus. For it is by grace you have been saved through faithand this not from yourselves, it is the gift of Godnot by works, so that no one can boast. For we are Gods workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Now look at 1Timothy 2:1 it says; I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyonefor kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. Look at Galatians 5:19 it says The acts of the sinful nature are obvious; sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God. (Jesus is so good, look at all the things he has save believers from doing, and even more.) Now look at 1Peter 4:1 it says; Therefore, since Christ suffered in his body, are yourselves also with the same attitude, because he who has suffered in his body is done with sin. As result, he does not live the rest of his earthly life for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God. For you have spent enough time in the past doing what pagans choose to doliving in debauchery, lust, drunkenness, orgies, carousing and detestable idolatry. They think it strange that you do not plunge with them into the same flood of dissipation, and they heap abuse on you. But they will have to give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead. For this is the reason the gospel was preached even to those who are now dead, so that they might be judged according to men in regard to the body, but live according to God in regard to the spirit. In closing look at Galatians 6:7 it says Do not be deceived; God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows. The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature will reap destruction; the one sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit will reap eternal life. Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up. Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers. The Other Center Of Attention At Your Wedding!

Monday, September 10th, 2007

By Carmel Baird There are so many different styles of centerpieces to choose from. The type of flowers you choose will often dictate the style of the arrangement. The theme and color scheme of your wedding will be a big factor in what flowers you choose. You don’t have to just have flowers, there are some wonderful combinations of flowers and fruits and this can be a way to get just the right colors too. Your wedding florist or wedding planner will be able to guide you in this area. Remember the arrangement should be low enough for your wedding guests to “chat over” or high enough for them to “talk under”. The centerpiece should never block your guests view, when your guests are seated, their head height should be a clear way view for them. If you are working on a tight budget, sometimes the table centerpieces are often included with the wedding reception venue costs. This is always a question you should ask when enquiring about costings. If they are included then the next question should be how much choice you have and if you don’t like the choice, are you able to organize your own arrangements and how much will the reduction in costs to you be. There are wedding equipment hire companies that will hire out containers and if you want a dramatic impact at your reception, then you may be able to go for a stunning container that needs not much in the flower department to get the WOW factor. Often times with flowers less can be more. You can always opt to make up your own bridal centerpieces, keep the theme simple if you’re not artistic, try three single stem vases on each table, clear always looks best, with a clean stem flower in each, a tulip, gerbera, orchid, rose. On a round or square table, group them in the center with a candle between or if you have rectangle tables, then place them down the center line and put a candle between each and at each end. Remember the head height rule for the size of the vases. Spaghetti jars lend themselves to so many options for centerpieces. You can have them filled with colored glass pebbles to match your wedding color scheme, then have flowers arranged at the top to cascade down, fill them with colorful potpourri, colored water with a floral decoration on top or even a candle with ribbons trailing down. If you don’t want flowers, then ask your florist to do some exotic fruit arrangements, or pyramids of lemons, limes or oranges or a combination of all three. Remember for a fun look, balloons floating above your wedding reception tables can look fantastic. These are held by special weights and can be color matched to your theme. This is often a less expensive centerpeice. You can have the balloons added to your floral centepiece too. If you think you might like this idea, then contact a balloon decorator, they are very artistic people and have some wonderful ideas, you will be amazed at what they will come up with. A piece of advice, when you are dealing with artistic, creative people, don’t try to restrict them too much, when you first consult with them, give then a free reign to come up with ideas for you, give them the details of your theme, your color scheme, flowers you like, the style of church/wedding ceremony venue, bridal reception room/marque, see what they come up with for you. Even if you have definite ideas, keep them to yourself to start with. Mostly these people are very creative and love nothing better than a challenge and to do something new. Many florists will do balloons and balloon decorators will do flowers. Often times they will work together too. You are only limited by your imagination and if your imagination happens to be limited, then ask for ideas, your family, your florist, your wedding planner will all throw their ideas into the hat, then you can sort through and decide which you would like best. Remember, with all that is placed on the wedding reception tables these days, keep this in mind when choosing your centerpieces. The ‘less is more’ often works best. What You Should Know About Scholarships

Sunday, September 9th, 2007

By Maria Estarellas When it’s time to go to college, the word “scholarship” is confusing for both students and parents. We automatically think about student loans, FAFSA, tuition and fees, EFC, grants, and work study. But what we don’t realize is that knowing more about the scholarship process could save us thousands of dollars when trying to cover the cost of our kids’ education. Scholarships are “free money” given away by the government, private institutions and organizations, charitable foundations, schools, universities, clubs, etc. Unlike loans, scholarships are not repaid to the scholarship provider. Some of the scholarships available are: Athletic Scholarships National Merit Scholarships Academic Merit Scholarships Professional, Career, and Trade Association-Sponsored Scholarships FAFSA Work Study Ethnic and Religious Scholarships Community Organization Sponsored Scholarships Special Scholarships Alumni Legacy Scholarships Transfer Student Scholarships With so many scholarships, how do you know which one to apply to or where can you go for an application? Some scholarships are based on your kid’s grades or financial needs, while others are awarded based on ethnic groups, athletic or artistic abilities, or given to students interested in a particular field. In some instances, your kids don’t have to have perfect grades to apply for a scholarship, and some don’t even ask for any proof of income. For example, the Work-Study Scholarship will require your kid to work part-time for the money given and most jobs are on campus. Finding information on scholarships on the Internet can be difficult because you won’t find everything you need to know to finance your child’s education. A year ago, when my daughter was going to college, I searched the Internet and the only thing I found simple enough to do was fill out a FAFSA application. Since I didn’t have time to search the Internet at the moment, and because other information I found was so confusing, I decided just to fill out the application and did nothing else. I promised myself that for the next year, I would search in advance because even though my daughter got some financial aid, I was convinced that there had to be other resources out there for her education. That’s when I came accross a guide written by a father that went through the process of getting a scholarship for his child, who spent time talking to financial aid officers at many universities and discovered that just filling out the CSS Profile and FAFSA financial aid forms and meeting some deadlines is only half the battle in acquiring Federal Pell grants, college need-based grants, and Federal Stafford and Perkins loans. I learned how college financial aid offices actually determine what federal aid and state grants will be given out to potential students and if you know in advance how to prepare yourself to receive the maximum amount for your child’s college education, you will obtain better results. Once you know where to find the information and when and how to apply for a scholarship, it will be easy to obtain financial aid for your kids. So You Want To Sell your Wares

Friday, September 7th, 2007

By Carmel Baird Sewing can be addictive, you start out making garments for yourself and your family and then see many other projects that you would like to do. Every time you visit a fabric store or craft shop you get ideas and sooner or later want to make up these projects. Some you can use in your home and give to family and friends as gifts, the compliments come and sure enough you want to do more, ….but to do more would require you to have more family or friends you can give them to and then there is the cost of it all. One way to recoup the costs is to sell these items, but how to go about it. There are many ways to go about doing this and here are a few ideas.. You can start with your family and friends, let them know that you are wishing to sell your items and if they could recommend your work to their friends and acquaintences. If you are wishing to take on the craft side of sewing or sewing homewares then you make up a sample range and maybe they would like to have a party for you to help get things off the ground. Selling by party plan is a great way, you take the orders at the party, have a delivery date for pick-up, this gives you the time to get the orders made and you don’t have to worry about collecting the money, the hostess will have done that for you and have it ready when you deliver the orders. You need a good incentive for the hostess so that others will be willing to host parties for you. You can book up parties from one party to another. Craft markets are anoher good outlet. the first time you go will be the wordt, in most cases that is, mainly because it takes the people time to get to know your products. A good line to sell at craft markets is handbags or scarves, both are popular, homewares like cushion covers, table runners, placemats and matching serviettes and yes there may be others there selling the same but yours will be unique to you. Visit the craft markets and see what is being sold and decide then on your product line. You can find unusual materials at factory outlets, try the interior designers or any retail outlet that has sample ranges of fabrics, these become superceded and can be bought very cheaply. Many retail outlets will take consignment stock, that means they take your stock and only have to pay you when they sell it. You put your price on the item and then they add their markup onto that. The bags and scarves are good to go into the fashion boutiques, the homewares into the interior decor and gift shops. Make up a list of your items with the price you want for them, package them or if you have a handyman around then maybe he will do up a display for you to go into the outlet if they are short on display stands, (don’t make them too big as room in these stores is often at a premium). You will need a consignment agreement that you and the retailer will agree to. Things like the time frame before the item is changed over, who carries the insurance, if your stock will be covered by the retailer’s insurance, how and when you will receive payment for your stock once sold, who keep the display neat and tidy, who is responsible if the stock is stolen. You also need to leave them a stock sheet with all the items you are leaving in their store. This they can mark off when something is sold and have a good record for you. Consignment stock doesn’t come into a store’s stock records until it is sold, so they will not have the same records as their other stock. That is a few things you need to work out, I’m sure you will think of others but it is important to get it all on paper right from the start. Some stores do a lot on consignment and already know the ins and outs but you need to know them too. Don’t be put off by all this, it is just doing the groundwork, setting things in place to cover yourself and once done you will be on your way. There is another area and that is the World Wide Web. There is always eBay and other auction sites but you could consider your own website. You could make it similar to the party plan idea, take the orders, give a delivery date, they pay when they place the order and include the postage and handling, then you make the idem and send it off. Making your won website today is very easy. There are places like FreeWebs, where you can design a site so easily and they even host it for you and you can do all that for free too. If you find it works then it would be better to get your own domain name and take their premium version that has more options. To collect the money there is Paypal, again free to get your account and FreeWebs make putting the access to Paypal on you website very easy too. With digital cameras, taking the photos for your website is very easy and FreeWebs make uploading them and even resizing them a snip. So you would have your very own store on the Internet, get your business cards done, even that can be done on your own computer now. There are packs of business cards you can purchase to print our yourself and they can be done with MS Word too. Have your details on your business card, your email address and your website address and hand them out to all you come in contact with. I know a salesman who, whenever he is introduced to someone, hands them his card as he goes to shake their hand, he always seems to have one in his hand. He’s practised it and has it down to perfection, you can do that too. So all in all, taking it one step at a time, you could have a very nice little business, your party plan, your craft markets, remember these are often monthly, your consignment stock and your website store. Now with all of these there are things you should search out first and make sure you follow the necessary procedures to cover yourself. Read the fine print before you sign anything and make sure you get the documantation in place where needed. Then go have fun as this can be a fun way to make some extra money and pay for your habit, the habit that is,of being swayed by fabric and projects and not being able to stay out of fabric stores and craft shops and above all else, loving your sewing. B2 Search Engine Optimization at the Next Level

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

By Daniel Flamberg Getting large numbers of likely-to-buy customers at low prices using search engine optimization techniques is becoming harder each day. Harvesting clicks with a high propensity to buy requires increasingly sophisticated strategies and dynamic, real-time tactics. The market is flooded with buyers that range from the most sophisticated seo mavens managing thousands of key words and variations with proprietary software to complete newbies with a land rush mentality and credit cards eager to get in on the ground floor of the newest, best hyped medium. The result is higher prices, less stable top rankings and efforts by the smart money players to find ways to separate clickers from buyers. According to the Performics division of DoubleClick the average cost per click increased from $27 to $30 from July to September 2005. Similarly keyword costs jumped from an average of $20 to $26 in the same time period. This reflects, in the opinion of Performics search strategist, the fact that campaigns are getting bigger and growing across the board. More marketers are buying more keywords and their variations across more sites bidding up the prices and squeezing the available inventory. Yet there might be a few bright spots according to Fathom Online reported that generic keyword prices have declined. But most savvy marketers have already abandoned as too expensive and too broad in favor of multi-word customer segmented tactics (e.g. girls black patent leather party pumps).B2B marketers have made a similar migration abandoning the inflated prices of broad terms like CRM in favor of narrower technical phrases like marketing automation and resource management tools. Search firms, eager to take in this bonanza, are making more inventory available as quickly as the can. Google separated Adwords from contextual ads, thereby increasing the number of sellable clicks and giving marketers some openings to test new tactics. Look for other leading search engines to follow suit and slice the salami thinner and thinner in the quest to have more inventory to sell. Then look for new opportunities to place targeted ads on blogs, RSS feeds, podcasts and web video. Search will remain hot for the foreseeable future and search engines will do everything they can to maximize selling opportunities and to encourage higher bidding. Just to keep it interesting, Google also re-jiggered the ranking algorithms which make it harder to get into the top positions and harder to maintain top rankings since the highest bid does not necessarily yield the top ranking. Others are likely to follow suit because the harder it is to rank number one, the more cash is thrown at the problem. The proportion of keywords that maintain the top rank for an entire month is steadily declining so you can bet that marketers are already husbanding dollars and planning A and B campaigns to insure they rank above the fold, at the top of the right hand paid column or in the beloved blue bar. Two ideas are shaping the next wave in SEO experimentation and the race for competitive advantage. The first notion is to make clicks more personalized by tracking where prospects click, determining who they are and dynamically serving content or unique landing pages designed to improve the chances that they will convert to buyers. The idea is to match profiles, stored in cookies, to inbound clicks and use these profiles to trigger customized messages or offers. This is the central idea behind Amazons recommendation engine, which has been widely accepted by consumers without too much outcry about privacy or Big Brotherism, and has been baked into their A9 search product. MSN is developing this targeting capability based on the millions of profiles it has amassed through Hotmail, MSN Mail and other MSN features and services though we havent seen any real life case studies yet. In theory persistent MSN cookies, corresponding to customer segments, can trigger select messages aimed at distinct segments, maybe as discrete as segments of one, which will result in more buys per click. In practice, this kind of micro-targeting will reduce buyers remorse and holds out the promise of better efficiencies for well crafted SEO campaigns. A variation would be for individual sites to use cookies to track repeat visitors and use stored data to trigger unique messages. So if youve looked around on a particular site, then you come back through a search engine, the site would recognize you as a repeat visitor, know what you looked at previously, and serve up content designed to continue the conversation, zero-in on what they inferred you are interested in and engage you in a way likely to either sell you something or convince you to identify yourself. In theory this multi-channel tracking might mark you as a hot lead and/or allow marketers to find several ways to identify or engage you in the course of a complex (b2b) or high value sales cycle. The gating factor is the availability of low cost technology to cookie, track, and dynamically serve content based on a matrix of rules. The second idea that could impact search effectiveness is clustering the results to surface relevant results faster and thereby accelerate the awareness-consideration-purchase cycle among clickers. Grokker and Clusty use graphic devices to group and organize the results of a search engine inquiry. In theory a clustering engine acts as a surrogate for the person conducting a search. It gets you to the information you want faster, makes you happier and speeds you along toward buying. In practice the clusters are still fairly big buckets of content that may or may not correspond to any individuals interests and intentions. The technology still cannot read and sort everything with equal clarity so often some of the items in the clusters shouldnt be there. There is no data with which to even guess at the value of this tool in moving people through a buying cycle. Clustering search engines are tertiary players in todays SEOmarket. Nonetheless look for personalization and clustering to be two highly touted SEO tactics as marketers seek efficiencies and advantages and as agencies and search engines try to keep the merry-go-round turning and the dollars flowing. Natural Hair Care Products - Why Are We Risking Our Health By Not Using Natural Hair Care Products?

Wednesday, September 5th, 2007

By Danny Siegenthaler A recent scientific study has revealed some very alarming results with respect to using hair dyes. Yes, this study clearly shows that regular use of non-natural hair dyes over a long period of time, or in a professional capacity, can lead to cancer. Heres what it said: Epidemiologic studies have revealed an association between occupational exposure to hair dyes and incidence of cancers. Several cohort and case-studies have shown increased risk of bladder cancer among hairdressers and barbers who are occupationally exposed to hair dyes. It has been reported that there is a statistically significant and a dose-dependent association between hair dyeing and risk of ovarian cancer. Women with prolonged use of dark, particularly black, hair dyes may have increased risk of fatal non-Hodgkins lymphoma and multiple myeloma (Murata, et al., 2006). [The above are the first two paragraphs of the study by Murata and colleagues, which provides an alarming set of information that every one who uses non-natural hair dyes should be aware of.] The chemicals associated with these non-natural hair care products are dangerous and potentially life threatening. This study has many implications and should be distributed as widely as possible, because many men and women use these types of products without the knowledge that they may be causing themselves long-term health problems. Natural hair care products used to dye hair do not contain these toxic chemicals and while natural hair dyes may not be as easy to use and may not last as long as some of their toxic counter-parts, the reduction in risk to ones health has to be worth the extra effort - if indeed there is extra effort involved. The warnings however, should not stop there. Hair shampoos and conditioners manufactured by many leading cosmetic companies still contain ingredients such as SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) and other potentially harmful ingredients, yet there are no warnings on the packets or labels to make consumers aware of any potential dangers. These types of chemicals, SLS, Parabens, Formaldehydes, MITs, etc., should be avoided at all cost. It is true, that in some cases, for example parabens, the scientist still do not agree whether these are indeed carcinogenic or not, but as I am not a gambler, my suggestion is, better not to use them in the first place, then find out later that they are… Similarly, although there is a shift toward using natural, safe ingredients in skin care products, there are still manufactures that will use non-natural ingredients which have not been sufficiently tested for their safety. Here too, it is wise to be cautious and err on the side of rather safe, then sorry, by choosing truly natural skin care products over others. Lets have a look at a typical body moisturizing lotion. The following ingredients are contained in a well known brand of skin care products: Water - fine Isopropyl Myristate - non-toxic Glycerin - non-toxic Stearic Acid - may cause eye irritation Cetyl Esters - Effects of Exposure: Immediate effects: Eye, skin and mucous membrane; Irritation may occur. Delayed effects: irritation of skin/eyes, burning, dryness, acne, hypopigmentation and dermatitis have been experienced. PEG-100 - Effects of Exposure: Skin: Dermatitis, Sensitisation/Allergic Reaction; Material is a photosensitiser; May irritate the eyes and skin. Glyceryl Stearate - non-toxic Triethanolamine - Skin/Eyes: Irritation, Redness, Pain, and Damage. Ingestion: Burns mouth, Pharynx and Esophagus; Abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhoea. Stearamide DEA - Effects of Exposure: Eyes: Mild eye irritation. Skin: Mild skin irritation (after prolonged or repeated contact). Inhalation: Irritation (upper respiratory tract). Prolonged or repeated overexposure may cause central nervous system depression. If swallowed: Irritation to gastrointestinal tissue; Central nervous system depression. Allantoin - non-toxic Methyl paraben - Inhalation: Very dangerous. Eyes: Irritant. Skin: Irritant. Ingestion: Irritant. Substance is toxic to Lungs. Repeated/prolonged exposure to the substance can produce organ damage. Imidazolidinyl Urea - Possible allergic reaction. Irritant reaction will occur at the test sites of patents suffering with suspected contact dermatitis. Carbomer - Effects of Exposure: Eyes: Irritation, corneal injury. Skin: Irritation/burns. Inhalation: upper respiratory irritation, anaesthesia. Ingestion: cardiac rate changes (persons with liver/kidney problems should avoid contact). Propyl paraben - Eyes/Skin: irritant. Inhalation/Ingestion: Dangerous. Substance is toxic to lungs. Honey - great Fragrance - not specified, but is synthetic - possibly toxic. [The information on the ingredients in the above list comes from a great service provided by Cornell University (web site provided later in this article).] This is a simple moisturising lotion, intended to moisturise your bodys skin - I dont know about you, but I would not put this anywhere near my skin. There is mounting evidence that many ingredients used in our hair care, personal care and skin care products are potentially hazardous to our health, yet despite these dangers, little of this evidence is presented or easily available to the general public. There is a great web site that provides information on ingredients at Cornell University: http://msds.ehs.cornell.edu/msdssrch.asp all you have to do is type the name of the ingredient you want to know about into the first search box. You will then get a results page. Usually the first one on the list is the one youd click. Then select Section 3 - Hazards Identification Including Emergency Overview, to see the potential hazards the ingredient may cause you. These data sheets are by no means a complete record of all the possible health implications that a particular ingredient may cause, but they will give you a good idea as to whether youd be better off to avoid the particular ingredient. Job Interview Questions: Interview Questions To Avoid

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

By Carl Mueller Here are some interview questions not to ask during a job interview: An interview question not to ask is one that discusses the issue of salary. You dont want to appear money-motivated since this is usually a big turnoff for interviewers. Let the interviewer broach the issue of money/compensation first. Related to the above point, another interview question not to ask is one that pertains to benefits, vacation time, sick days, stock options or things of that nature. There will be plenty of time to ask about these things once you get to the job offer stage. Dont ask questions that focus on what you want. Focus on questions that indicate your interest in the job and that show what you can do for the company. This is not the time to ask about your chances of getting transferred to one of the companys exotic international locations. A final interview question not to ask is any question that is already answered on the companys website. If the answer is shown on the website, it shouldnt be asked during an interview. A basic rule of thumb is to avoid asking questions that appear self-serving. Certainly you will be talking about things that are relevant to you at some point during the interview process salary, job title, etc but some things are just not a good idea to bring up during the interview. Also, try to stay away from asking any really basic questions that you should already know the answer to.
