The Truth About Your Partner’s Natural Rhythms - How Power Struggles Can Blow Up Your Relationship

Friday, October 19th, 2007

By Melody C Not many people know about the hidden power struggles that can occur in a relationship or marriage. This article is about a hidden powerstruggle known as rhythms. Every person has their own unique rhythm whether that is how they eat, sleep, work, relax, or even think and breathe. However, in our society, we have been taught to assume to everyone is alike, or that there is a specific way that everyone needs to go about their day in order to strive and be successful. This can cause a powerstruggle in a relationship in two ways. 1) Each partner will think that the other person has the same rhythm as them, so if they are not doing things the same way as them they are either doing things wrong or intentially trying to resist them. 2) If the partners are trying to copy the other persons rhythm, it will be not in their highest and best interest. They will not be productive or be in a healthy lifestyle for the individual, which leads to powerstruggles anyway. This article is to bring attention to some of the less well known types of rhythms in a relationship. Our first is what I will call a task accomplishment rhythm. In our work, we teach individuals and couples something similar called workstyles which are ways how people like to carry out their work or activities such as Guideline people who need a basic guideline or structure 24 hours a day or Employee people who like to go by other peoples rules for a certain portion of the day, then the rest of the time they go by their own rules. For task accomplishment rhythms, I will use Rob, my Life Partner (who is also the Director/Counsellor for the Life Management Centre/ LMC Relationship Centre and Co-author of Love by Design) and myself as an example. When Rob is accomplishing tasks throughout his day, he likes to do a whole bunch of tasks, one after the other, nonstop without any breaks. Then stop for the day. I on the other hand, although having an Employee Workstyle, while I am actually working for or with the other person, like to work for a while, take a break, work for a while, take a break etc. In the beginning of our relationship, there was an unconscious powerstruggle, mostly felt by me because I couldnt keep up the same momentum as Rob, especially if we had been out shopping or in public, I would have to have rest and recoup before I could charge into the next task at hand. I would get really tired and uncomfortable, and Rob would feel my resistance. That didnt last for long though, as soon as I recognized that my rhythm was different than Robs, I brought it to his attention. I accepted that my rhythm is different than his and he has incorporated my rhythm into his schedule, so I can rest in peace, and then join him again in our tasks. The good news is that I was just as productive as Rob, as long as I kept true to myself and my rhythm. Another example of a rhythm is that people have different speech patterns, speed and rhythms. Rob had a couple come in to see him once, were the couple was having a communication problem. The wife talked a mile a minute; the husband talked very slowly and paused a lot when talking. The wife often cut him off, between pauses, the husband often feeling offended by being interrupted all the time and the wife always felt like they werent getting anywhere in their communication. Would you believe the powerstruggle was there simply because they werent aware that they had different speaking rhythms? As soon as Rob pointed this out to them, and taught them how to understand, appreciate and not be in nonresistance to their rhythm their communication greatly improved. The wife, especially learned to be aware of the husbands pause, and that the pause didnt mean he was finished talking. There are many other types of rhythms out there that will be unique to you and to you partner. Your assignment, if you choose to accept it, is to be aware of your feelings. If you ever feel like you are in resistance to your partner, such as feeling angry, a drop of energy or the need to dig your heels in, be on the look out and feel out for a potential rhythm that may be different. Next, bring you partner into awareness, then accept, and appreciate both your partners and your own unique rhythms. With acceptance, nonresistance and being authentic, you will find that not only will the resistance fade away, both of your fill be at you fullest, and highest and best capacity in all areas of your lives. Anniversary Gifts - Thirty-First Anniversary

Thursday, October 18th, 2007

By Michael Russell Now that you’ve had time to recover from your thirtieth anniversary, it’s time to get ready for number 31. The anniversary gift idea, which is modern only, is time pieces. Interesting that they didn’t use the term clock or watch. If you’re not sure whether this leaves your choices wide open or narrows them down, the best way to figure this out is to look up the definition of “time piece” in the dictionary. If you look up the definition of time pieces in the dictionary you will find that it says, “An instrument, such as a clock or watch, that measures, registers, or records time”. Sounds like this can be just about anything that tells time. Having said that, remember, this is a big anniversary. I mean, talk about time. So don’t go heading out to Sears and get some $10 piece of junk. There are so many nice and unusual time pieces that you can get. Need some ideas? No problem. Let’s start off with a big one. How about a grandfather clock? Yes, they’re expensive and they’re very hard to maintain, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing. However, there are places that specialize in caring for these collectors’ items and plenty of sites on the Internet with instructions on how to care for your grandfather clock. Think this won’t bring a surprised look to your spouse’s face? It will. If the thought of having one of those monsters in your house doesn’t exactly appeal to you, then maybe you’ll want to go with something a little smaller. A nice antique pocket watch should do the trick. Yes, this kind of gift is more for guys than for ladies, but certainly your husband is worth it. Just make sure that you get one with a chain on the end of it so he can attach it to his pocket. You might actually even get him to dress up after he has one of these things. Of course, there are those of us who think grandfather clocks and antique pocket watches are corny and clichd. For those people, there are always your more standard time pieces. Today, with digital watches and clocks, there are plenty of styles to choose from. Of course, for the ladies, you may just want to get your wife a nice regulation ladies watch. You know the kind. The ones with the small wrist band and the equally small watch face. You can’t really tell what time it is on these things, especially when you get older and your eyes start to go, but they do look nice. Of course finding a watch for a man is a lot easier. The watch faces are much bigger so you don’t have to worry about him not being able to tell what time it is. You can go with the traditional watch with hands or the brand new digital kind if your husband considers himself a man of the new age. Either way, at least he won’t be late for dinner. Time pieces may not be as romantic as pearls and diamonds, but at least they’re practical. Tips on Creating Waterfalls for Your Garden Pond

Wednesday, October 17th, 2007

By Rob Buenaventura Gardening is a hobby that invites people from all walks of life and financial circumstances to participate. Those who enjoy this particular pastime are often quite avid in their love of gardening and their appreciation of the great outdoors. Many people add ponds in order to further enjoy their beautiful outdoor oasis but did you know how simple it is to turn your ordinary little pond into a waterfall? A waterfall for your garden pond is not only an excellent way to display even more of your flora and fauna but also an excellent way to add even more attention grabbing scenery to your landscape. Below you will find detailed information about how to create a waterfall of your very own. Obviously you will want to focus on layout and design before you begin constructions plans for your outdoor sanctuary. The first thing you must do is make sure that the waterfall doesnt overpower the landscape or occupy too much space. Your waterfall should be proportionate to the size of your garden and the pond as balance is what most of us seek in our gardens. The next step is to determine the type of construction you will be utilizing for this venture. Two common methods include either using pre-formed pond molds or creating your own liners and using rocks for the layout. The important thing is that you choose the method that you feel will best exemplify the theme of your garden and the waterfall you are preparing to create. Once youve gotten the basics you should take things a step further and select the type of pump you will need for your waterfall and pond. This is important, as it will transfer the water in your garden to the top where the waterfall will be. The size of pump you will need is largely dependent upon the size of your waterfall (width and height). Be sure to discuss this very carefully with the dealer in order to make sure you are getting a pump that will work for your needs. If you want the water supply in your waterfall to be clean and clear (and this is something that is best for your waterfall) you should also make sure you have some sort of filtration system in place in order to filter out impurities. Your dealer should also be of assistance in this aspect as well. Once you have a list of the required materials in hand you should then grab a shovel and get to work. You need to make sure you have hollowed out the proper amount of ground in order to achieve the proper proportions for your waterfall and pond. Once youve created your holes, insert the forms and liners. Rocks should be situated so that the water can flow through them if youve ever had the experience of visiting a natural waterfall you will want to employ a similar look and feel for your own waterfall. Fiberglass forms will save a good bit of work, as you will only need to dig the amount necessary for the form to fit. Once youve installed the form you can begin placing the filter, pump, and hoses that are necessary as well as the electricity source. Once youve completed these necessary task you can begin adding water, plants, and fish to your waterfall and pond. You will find that once all is said and done that you have added a beautiful and relaxing enhancement to your outdoor living area. Most people find that the added enjoyment of this rather simple addition drastically improves their ability to relax and enjoy this space. So sit back, relax, and enjoy the fruits of your labor. 4 Tips For A Successful First-time Showing At Any Tradeshow

Sunday, October 14th, 2007

By Elizabeth Catalanotto Planning for an exhibit in a trade show can be intimidating for even the most seasoned of participants, and, particularly with first-timers, the potential gains may not outweigh the time, expense and headache involved. However, with the right kind of planning, it can be the most beneficial opportunity of the year for increasing client base and profits. With these four tips for first-time participants, even the smallest company can make the biggest splash at any trade show. 1.) To rent or not to rent? A professional, well-organized exhibit is the first step in attracting potential customers. Renting an exhibit is attractive, especially if you participate in three or less shows a year. It allows you to update your exhibit at each show without incurring the large expense of recreating an exhibit each year. A rental unit allows you to unload part of the headache on someone else, both in design and production. If an element of your exhibit isn’t effective, it can be changed quickly for the next show, without losing any money. 2.) Booth Placement: An often overlooked aspect of a company’s first tradeshow is their booth placement. Some shows allow new participants to choose their location, while others go by seniority. Try to get a location that is as close to the entrance as possible, but also in close proximity to your competitors, particularly big-name competitors. You don’t want to hide from your competition; you want customers to compare you with them. 3.) Market your brand: Your main purpose at a trade show is to market your company, your brand, to as many potential customers as possible. One of the biggest ways to do this is to sponsor the show. Show sponsors’ logos are usually printed on both banners and advertisements for the show, as well as on name badges that everyone who enters the event will wear. Long after a potential customer has passed your booth, the consistent reappearance of your brand will ensure a place in your future client’s memory. 4.) Design materials: Technological advancements have completely changed the way trade show exhibits are set up. You now have the choice between incorporating digital elements into your exhibit, including interactive kiosks that can take some of the pressure off of your human presenter. Also, exhibitors are no longer limited to laser-printed designs for panels and backdrops. Cloth panels are taking over, mainly for their ease of storage and transportation. Cutting costs with the amount of labor required to transport and set up the exhibit will allow for more to be spent on the actual exhibit, and attract more customers. Hopefully, by keeping in mind rental options, booth placement, brand marketing and design materials, your first trade show exhibit will be a successful one. Elizabeth Catalanotto is a trade show expert with Nimlok Louisiana, and considers quality tradeshow graphics an essential element of a successful exhibit. Timing Your Website Sales Copy

Friday, October 12th, 2007

By Abe Cherian Online ecommerce with today’s economy creates precaution inevery prospects mind. They have become much wiser andsmarter. Having the best looking website isn’t all thatmatters. A compelling sales copy will greatly enhance yourchances to generate the wealth you’re looking for. Help your prospects fill their need. There is a wallstanding between your product and your prospect and that isthe prospects inhibitions. The mind is skeptical, pessimistic, sour, untrusting, doubtful, hesitant, cynical, and suspicious as soon as it realizes that it is getting asales pitch. Unfortunately, on the Internet the mind’s inhibitions gointo being precautious; “You shouldn’t buy things on theinternet; there is a chance that someone can steal yourcredit card information.” “You are just going to get rippedoff, you can’t trust people online, they are all scamartists.” “This deal is too good to be true.” “It’s way toomuch money, you have bills to pay, and you don’t need thisright now. You’ve heard it before right? Your sales copy is the ladder, so to speak, that allows theprospect to overcome the “wall” of inhibitions his or hermind creates which stop him or her from buying the solutionto their need that you are offering. There are two kinds of sales copy. One is to fascinate thereader with claims on just this side of believable. Theother is to draw the reader in with valuable, interestinginformation while having them realize a need and offering asolution to that need. I find the other to be more effective for most products anda properly balanced combination of the two to be even moreeffective. A successful piece of copy has the readernodding his head in agreement. It allows the mind to weighthe benefits of the product and it’s inhibitions and tipsthe scales in favor of the benefits offered by the product. Without being pushy and/or unbelievable, a successful pieceof copy has the reader excited about having found thesolution to their problems, excited about finally knowingthat they won’t have to worry about that problem again. They feel excited in general, without over hyping. “Hype”will lower your credibility and may drive otherwise willingprospects away. It’s a real turn off to consumers when it’s obvious theyare being “pitched” and they won’t believe your “wild, unbelievable claims.” Even if they do end up purchasing outof curiosity when they find that you weren’t able todeliver on your outlandish claims they will never purchasefrom you again and may even create negative word of mouthfor you. You must gain the readers interest with a comment, interesting point, benefit, headline, or question and thennudge them closer to the sale. Say something that bringsthem closer to buying. This may cause your prospect to drawback into their inhibitions and consider leaving. Byimmediately stating something that revolves around them isgoing to keep them interested enough to buy. The sales copy must be written almost immediately after youhave come up with the idea for your product. There is noother time at which you will be more emotionally chargedand able to write passionate copy that is from the point ofview of your prospect. It must be done before you start onyour product. Right now, at this point in the process, you are writingsales copy for a fantasy product as a person with anunfulfilled desire. If you choose to write your copysometime in the future, after starting or worse, completingyour product, you will be writing as someone who isoffering something that already exists. What’s More Important: an MBA or Experience?

Monday, October 8th, 2007

By Ioan Hepes Experience is definitely one of the most important factors in a recruiting process. Actually, enough work-experience is also a requirement for all good MBA programs. The MBA is the certification that you have also learned all the important tools that are necessary for a management position. Of course, through years of experience, through self-documentation, failures and successes you might have learned what others learn during 1 or 2-year MBA programs. And, of course, one can become the CEO of a Fortune 500 company without an MBA, or even without complete studies (see Mr. Gates). In the end, it all depends on the person. For a person which is less entrepreneur and not planning to start his/her own business but to apply to a large company, I would definitely recommend doing an MBA. The HR departments get hundreds of applications a day, many of them are automatically selected by using database searches, so for certain jobs, CVs not containing “MBA” might not even pass the first recruiting step. We’re living in a global world with thousands of applications, from everywere and world ruled by technology, where people are often preselected by a computer. On the other hand, MBA without experience, is also not the ideal candidate which companies want, maybe for an entry-level management position or traineeship. So, as always, balance is the solution, but it is recommendable to first have the experience before deciding upon the strategy of an enterprise or the faith of hundreds of employees. Juice Fasting — Clean Your Insides

Sunday, October 7th, 2007

By Sara Schell A wise man once said, Blessed are those who hunger and thirst, for they are sticking to their diets. What a fit description of the seemingly endless battles that we fight to lose weight and to stay healthy and vital for as long as humanly possible! Up and down, up and down, your metabolism bounces between walking pace and light speed; you have nightmares about celery sticks; you can work out the exact calorie count of every meal in 2.5 seconds; and the wheels on your exercise bike spontaneously combusted months ago. In short, you wear yourself out and end up landing on a bottom that, despite all your best efforts, still looks like a pair of bowling balls. Juice fasting is a great way to get off the dieting rollercoaster and see real results quickly. Safe and effective when carried out correctly, juice fasting benefits your entire being: Your physical wellbeing increases as the body is rid of toxins and excess fat. Your mind benefits because fasting creates a stillness that brings mental clarity and helps you to develop will power and to better control your senses. As you lose weight and feel much better about yourself, self-esteem improves and sets you on the road to what could be a life changing experience, connecting you to your spirit and helping you to achieve balance in your life. Juice Fasting and Weight Loss A juice fast is a great way to shed some extra pounds, especially when youre in a hurry. During the fast the body uses its own stored substances and, at the same time, detoxifies. A healthy combination of juices squeezed from fresh fruits and vegetables adds vitamins, minerals and trace elements to the body. Because your only source of nourishment during the fast is water and the juices that you drink, its imperative that the juices you drink contain the maximum possible amounts of enzymes, vitamins and other nutrients in the fresh produce. Many of the juicers on the market process the fresh fruits and veggies in a way that destroys many of the nutrients in the food. A top quality juicer such as the Oscar VitalMax juicer is an excellent tool for the job because it serves up living juices. The food is processed in such a way that it retains as many nutrients and essential enzymes as possible. Juice fasting is a much better diet option than fad diets. Fad diets literally starve the body of nutrients. On the other hand, juice fasting provides the body with the nutrients it needs for vibrant health, helping to fix any chemical imbalances in the body even those created by fad diets. Juice Fasting and Detoxification Juice fasting for detoxification is probably the most well-known usage of this particular type of fast. Juice fasting allows the organs of the body to rest, cleansing and revitalising them. The organs functioning is much better, which in turn aids in the digestion of food and production of energy for day to day life. Juice fasting may also be helpful for the treatment and prevention of fluid retention. Juice Fasting: How To Before launching into a fast, its a good idea to begin preparing the body a week ahead. Cut out or reduce nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, sugar and wheat. Ideally the diet prior to fasting should consist mainly of fruits, vegetables and beans. If youve never fasted before it might be a good idea to limit your first fast to three or four days. Sometimes abstaining from food entirely is a bit much, so its ok to eat fresh fruit or veggies if your stomach is complaining. Now its time to get juicing! If you cant make your own juices buy them from a health food shop the fresher, the better. The GreenPower Kempo juicer is another excellent juicer that produces high quality juices to help you to get the best possible result from your fast. Mix between one and three parts of pure water with your juice of choice. To get you started, here a few tasty recipes courtesy of Fasting to Freedom, by Tom McGregor: Joggers Paradise 3 oranges 2 hard pears 1 small yam Mix and add a little crushed ice. Great for energy. A Taste of Heaven 2 carrots 1 sweet potato 2 apples Thin slice of Spanish onion Pinch of Dulse powder For energy and endurance. Red Ice 1 beet 1 sweet potato 2 apples 1 lemon 1 tomato Thin slice of Spanish onion 1 garlic clove can of frozen apple concentrate Sit back and relax! With the aid of a good juicer or fresh juice from a health shop, give yourself a power up and try a juice fast. Better than any fad diet, you can stop running yourself ragged. Its a great way to remove toxins from the body, to lose weight, and to improve your health and wellbeing. Look better, feel better, be healthier than ever before! Please note: It’s always safest to get the advice of a health care professional before making drastic changes to your diet, particularly if arent well to start with. Even natural juices can interfere with medication and you should consult your doctor before fasting. Good Fats and Bad Fats; what is The Real Difference?

Saturday, October 6th, 2007

By Jim O’Neill For most of us, eating is one of the most satisfying things we do in our everyday lives. As a matter of fact, we have our favorite dishes, favorite drinks and favorite snack foods which only proves that eating is one of our favorite activities. There’s really nothing wrong with that since food, a primary necessity of man, is the one responsible for making us healthy, fit and giving us energy to perform everyday tasks. But improper intake of food might do us more harm than good. Proper information about healthy eating should always be at hand so that certain illnesses can be prevented, and as for the case of obesity, it can be treated through fat burning and weight loss. A common misconception in the area of food and nutrition is that fat is always bad. But is it really? Fat is the body’s major energy storage system. When the energy from the food we eat and drink can’t be used by our body right away, the body turns it into fat for later use. The body uses fat from foods for energy, to cushion organs and bones, and to make hormones and regulate blood pressure. Some fat is also necessary to maintain healthy skin, hair and nails. Thus, one should not eradicate all fat from the diet. But, too much fat can lead to many health problems such as heart disease, obesity, diabetes and more. We can determine that not all fats are created equal and knowing the difference between the bad ones and the good ones will lead you to making healthier choices. There are the saturated fats - the unhealthy ones - and the unsaturated fats - the good and healthy ones.Let’s review each and see just how different they really are. Saturated Fat: Unhealthy Ones Saturated fats, which are generally solid at room temperature, are the least healthy and tend to increase the level of cholesterol in our blood. They are also largely responsible for causing artery blockage which leads to eventual heart failure. Foods that contain saturated fat include butter, cheese, margarine, shortening, tropical oils such as coconut and palm oil and the fats in meat and poultry skin. Consumption of these oils and foods should be limited. Otherwise, they may bring serious health problems. Unsaturated Fat: Healthy Ones Unsaturated fats reduce blood cholesterol when they replace saturated fats in the diet. There are two types of unsaturated fat: monounsaturated fat and polyunsaturated fat. Monounsaturated fats have been shown to raise the level of HDL (the ‘good’ cholesterol that protects against heart attacks) in the blood, so in moderation they can be part of a healthy diet. This is why they are known as the good fats. Olive, canola, and peanut oils are good sources of monounsaturated fats. All fats, even the good ones will still make you gain weight if too much is consumed. The key here is to keep all fats in moderation but try to make the majority of your fat intake come from the good ones whenever possible. No more than 20% of your daily calorie intake should be from fat of any kind, especially if you are trying to lose weight.
