Promises, Promises - A Discussion of Weight-Loss Products & Why We Keep Buying Them

Blink In my day I have tried thousands of dollars of weight-loss products, spent countless time organizing and throwing them out, and plenty of time performing self-imposed trials upon myself to see if they actually did perform as promised by their manufacturers. What does all about this prove besides the fact that Ive wasted a lot of time and money trying to lose the same ten pounds over the past ten years? It has given me a real good sense of what is promised, why it is promised, and perhaps, what insecurities drive us to buy them. In this article I will share with you a few simple tips of things to think about before you purchase that next weight loss promise. Number one. Never, ever purchase a product because it promises you something that sounds too good to be true. How many products have promised consumers to guarantee weight loss? And how many of these products have, in long-term and credible studies, have provided the user with firm evidence in support of their claims? Very few. And many contain what I like to call along with additions to such claims. Let me explain. Many diet pills, for example, promise that you will lose weight three times as fast as one would without their supplement. Their along with claims are usually something like this our product, along with diet and exercise. But weight, I mean wait, thats why we starting taking this product, correct? Because we were unable to inspire ourselves to diet and exercise in the first place! Post Bran Flakes, for instance, promises that a person will lose 10 pounds in their Eat 2, Lose 10 marketing campaign. However, ask yourself how likely is it that a person will really be willing, or likely, to swap out two of their daily meals in favor of a bowl of Grape Nuts? I mean, I like Grape Nuts and everything, but Suzi-Qs still hold more appeal to me. Number two. For about 90 percent of people, weight loss is a mental health issue as well as a physical issue. In other words, my belief is that if a physical condition is not present which either leads to weight gain or prevents weight loss, mental health is certainly part of the overweight picture. After all, our mind does play a large role in controlling our appetite. In fact, I personally believe that people actually have two appetites, one physical and the other mental. For instance, youre driving down the road and you are suddenly overcome with feelings of light-headedness and hunger pangs. Okay, thats physical. Thats your body trying to tell you that you need food, and now! But what about those times that one feels hungry although they are having no physical symptoms? These are the times that you being feeling for example bored or depressed, after which your mind translate these mental thoughts and needs into Im physically hungry. I believe that for many of us this appetite confusion is set firmly in our subconscious by the time we in our teens. I guess the bottom line here is this: when purchasing a weight loss product remember that though this product may be promising to suppress hunger physically, there is probably little that it can do to suppress your mental appetite. Number three. You cant cheat the system. I think down deep, we all really want to believe that this statement is not true. For instance, I continue to struggle with those same ten pounds that I have been struggling with since the day I graduated from high school. Why? Not because I do not know what to eat, what is healthy, and how important exercise is but simply because, in short, I hate to exercise and I love sweets. I think, okay I know, that in the back of my mind Ive always believed that somehow I could cheat the system- that if I just ate only pineapple, didnt eat after 5:00 p.m., or cut out carbohydrates completely, Id finally achieve the physique of Elle MacPherson. Well, Elles job looks secure with me as her replacement because Elle probably doesnt cheat. Of course, the purpose of this entire article is to say just this: if you are not born with the body of a supermodel, you probably will never be one unless you are willing to put an enormous amount of time in the gym, very little time in the kitchen, and the rest of your time at the plastic surgeons office. If you are not however, one of the few willing to make these sacrifices and all of them with a beautiful and brilliant smile on your face, my advice to you would be this- dont quit your day job, learn to accept the fact that we cannot all fit into societys perception of beauty, and enjoy who you are- enjoy every minute of it. Exploring Depression

Most of us have felt down at times, but serious depression is a downer over a longer period.( The purpose of this article is in no way intended for diagnostic or prescribing purposes, but is simply a brief overview of a very complex topic.) It is important to understand what depression is in order to do anything about it. There are varying degrees of depression. Sometimes people can feel depressed a little and it goes away easily. Sometimes people can be depressed a lot, and it doesnt go away, but leads to suicidal tendencies. These would represent the two ends of a continuum. Where do you fall on the continuum? When considering this continuum idea, you can see different people will need different treatment. Not all people will need help, as some can overcome it on their own, but any depression that continues for more than 2 weeks needs attention from a qualified practitioner. Depression is often associated with low serotonin levels, but this doesnt, in my opinion, lead to a very explicit definition of depression. (At least one that most people can understand.) A better way, I believe, to start understanding depression is to think of depression as this: When a person requires something outside themselves to motivate them or make them feel happy. In other words, they lack the inner motivation or ability to take care of their own happiness. They are heavily reliant on other people, places, and things. One warning: Do not confuse being tired with being depressed. You can be tired without being depressed, but you usually dont have depression without being tired. It is also worth mentioning that anxiety, euphoria, irritability, unreasonableness, and mood swings often accompany depression A lack of serotonin will make one tired. A lack of melatonin will cause sleep imbalances. Also, low serotonin levels will cause low melatonin levels as well, because some serotonin will convert to melatonin in the evening to help induce sleep. Going back to my definition, this creates an umbrella, which I believe many people will reside under. It is just a matter of degree. A lot of people are dealing with depression and dont realize it. I have seen this a lot and it is sad because people arent living up to their potential. Depression even in small amounts can hurt ones self-esteem and the ability to accomplish their best in life. What are the causes? What can we do about it? First of all, depression that gets worse needs to be seen by a qualified practitioner or doctor. Some people have found some drugs to be helpful. But usually the drugs are a short-term solution and those who are on them, need to address the deeper problems. Depression can be caused by unresolved anger, toxic liver /colon, very run-down weak immune system, run-down brain from stress, living with toxic people, food allergies, dietary imbalances, abuse as a child, blood sugar imbalances etc. The causes are numerous as are the solutions. It can go beyond normal though and anxiety is a form of depressive illness Anxiety is not that bad though. It keeps us primed, as if it trains us to be always on our toes. It also keeps us psychologically alert. These exercises can be good but to a certain extent or limit only. Beyond the limit, things may start to get nasty. When we are engulfed with a bout of panic attack, we have one of two choices. We can either face it or get away from it. This is better known as the fight/flight response. Given a choice, would you face panic attack and experience its full impact, or would you rather retreat or run away from it? Read these 10 tips to reduce your stressed life before you find yourself with that terrible burnout feeling. 1. Take time out to savor the fresh scent of nature, especially flowers. Eight glasses of water everyday. This is a common diet tip and most people know this, yet they still don’t drink enough water during the day. There are some very important reasons for drinking water. It hasnt got any calories and its devoid of caffeine and chemicals. Sometimes when you think youre hungry, its really thirst that will curb the cravings. Cold water can be hard on the kidneys so drink it lukewarm. 2. Try and have some variety. When you do your grocery shopping, buy some vegetables youve never tried before. Its easier to resist temptation if you have healthy foods in the house. 3. When you park the car, park as far as you can from the bank, grocery store, dry cleaners and enjoy the walk. It increases your metabolism and you can burn off more calories per day. 4. Buy some of those hideous tasting, stop-biting-your-nails polish. Feeding the Hummingbirds

Ralph Early in May here in west central Wisconsin, I can count on seeing a Ruby Throated Hummingbird hovering in front of my kitchen window, flitting back and forth, as if to say, “there was a hummingbird feeder RIGHT HERE last year. Where is it?” And then I know it is time to put out hummingbird nectar. I feed a 3-to-1 mixture of water and sugar (3 cups of water and 1 cup of sugar brought to a boil and cooled to room temperature). After the hummingbirds’ long trip from South America, they are thin and hungry. The general rule-of-thumb is a 4-to-1 mixture, but to start out in early spring I always use a 3-to-1 mixture. Later on in the summer, when there are more flowers available, I switch to a 4-to-1 mixture. I know it is important to wash the hummingbird feeder when I fill it to clean out any mold. I know it is also important to thoroughly rinse the hummingbird feeder when I am finished cleaning it to remove any soap or other chemicals. If the feeder has visible mold, I use a bleach solution (1 teaspoon of bleach to several cups of water) to kill off the mold and mildew. Then I rinse the feeder thoroughly, under running water, for several minutes with hot water and for several minutes with cold water. The best hummingbird feeder I’ve found is a Rubbermaid feeder. It holds two cups of nectar, and it is as sturdy now as it was when I bought it four years ago. Other hummingbird feeders cracked when I tried to wash them, either at the end of the first year or the beginning of the next. I also set out two of those little “flower balls” for the hummingbirds little round balls that hold about a quarter cup of nectar with a large, brightly-colored plastic flower that fits down inside the neck. The flower balls fit into a holder that mounts on a steel rod pushed down into the ground. The hummingbirds love the “flowers” that give them another source of food. Usually, right around our yard, we have between four and six pair of Ruby Throated Hummingbirds. Later on in the summer, when their offspring start coming for the nectar, we have many more hummingbirds flying around the yard. Pine trees on the east and north sides of the yard provide a perch for the hummingbirds while they wait their turn to get at the feeder. Not that the hummingbirds are especially patient about waiting their turn at the feeder. They chase each other around and chatter and scold. I am scolded, too, when I have the audacity to remove the feeder from its hook in front of the kitchen window so that I can wash it out and fill it with fresh nectar. On more than one occasion, I have ducked to avoid a collision with a hummingbird. I have learned not to wear a red shirt when taking down the hummingbird feeder during the day. A red shirt causes the hummingbirds to flit back and forth in front of my face, as if searching for the perfect access to this huge, glorious RED flower they see before them. Instead of filling the hummingbird feeders during the day and risking a collision with the tiny birds, I often wait until after dark to take down the feeder, wash it and fill it with fresh nectar. That way, when the hummingbirds are looking for food early in the morning, they will find a clean feeder filled with fresh nectar. As the season progresses, the hummingbirds dramatically increase their nectar consumption so that by July, I am filling the hummingbird feeder at least once per day. I like having the hummingbird feeder in front of my kitchen window where I can closely observe the hummingbirds as they perch on the feeder and dip their beaks into the nectar. When the light is just right, I can see their impossibly long tongues darting out to suck up more of the liquid or to lick off the tiny droplet hanging from the end of their beaks. When the light is just right, it is also easy to see why they are called “Ruby Throated” hummingbirds. The red feathers at the base of the male’s throat glow like the ruby slippers in the Wizard of Oz. All summer long I watch the hummingbirds, and as September approaches, they became more and more frantic to eat as much as they can, in preparation for the long flight back to South America. And then, early in September, one day it will dawn on me that I haven’t seen as many hummingbirds. As more days pass, the remaining hummingbirds leave too. Eventually I don’t see any hummingbirds at all, and I know it will be many months, with a long hard winter in between, before I can once again feed the hummingbirds that hover in front of my kitchen window. They were definitely there right before our eyes just like our stomachs and bigger thighs are now. We saw only the cake, ice-cream, the second helpings and the get more for your money supersize deals. We relished these times so much they became a daily habit. Most of us had friends who didnt hesitate to indulge in the daily festivals or invite us to some of theirs. The eat, drink, and be merry crowd was alive and kicking. Now, looking back on it the only thing that we should be kicking is our own butts. We turned ourselves into human storage facilities not so much unlike those places we use when we are moving and need to put our big old furniture somewhere. The only difference is those places store a host of things and we only store one thing, namely fat. Fats a good word and a good thing when you are stranded on the side of MT. Everest for a week after getting separated from the expedition party. Most of us are not really going to be involved in any thing of that nature so it would be safe to say we really dont need an abundance of fat. We need just enough to pad those internal vital organs and a few other essential needs that arrive. I remember a few of my signals ,tell me if they are recognizable in your memories, for one I noticed my pants starting to fit just a little bit snug so what I started doing was unfastening the top button and letting my belt hold them up. This worked out good and gave my stomach some breathing room. Another thing was after the belt started becoming too small to do this I had to go up a size in them. This again worked for awhile ,then that size started getting to small and I had to repeat the belt move (with a larger belt I might add) and this worked great. All was good in the land until history repeated itself and I had to start a new process over again. This involved bigger belt and larger pants size. I remember shopping in the store one day and saying to my self, these designers are ripping people off because I know for a fact they are not making these pants sizes what they should be. I know these size 40 pants are really 38. These shirts say xxl but I know for a fact these are xl. The thought that I had actually went from a size 34 to size 40 was too ridiculous for my mind to process I kind of notice I might had put on a smidgen of weight but I knew it was maybe because the medicine I was taking was making me hold a little extra water and that was the culprit to my beginning– to– expand circumstance. I also told myself that the tiny bit of weight I was putting on would not be hard at all to burn off with a couple of jumping jacks here and there. It was getting a little too hard to be jumping around without any real purpose though so that idea went by the wayside. One day I took that look in the mirror again-you know that Am I actually a fat boy now –look-and the mirror looked at me right in the eyes and said yes you are. You are actually a fat boy that wears xxl shirts and size 40 pants. Thats when something, lets call it shame for the heck of it, came into my mind and said I had better do something now to reverse this trend . Weight loss Im on my way. I started researching mountains of information to learn how to get in shape. I started cross checking information and throwing out the diet myths that were destroyed and I listed anything that appeared the same in my entire research field. I had one concern that hovered over my spirit and that was I didnt want to embark on a plan that I couldnt do for life. I didnt want to deny myself my favorite love-to-eat foods and I didnt want to exercise until I got very dizzy and passed out. I needed something where I could still eat my favorite foods and still exercise without busting blood vessels. After trial and error and more research coupled with trial and error I finally had my plan. I put my plan into use and went from a 260 pound Mt-Everest –stranded–fat–needed guy to a guy who resembles the guy in my college yearbook of 20 years age. At 205 and 61 I look and feel a lot better. In fact after I get though writing this Im going to have some chocolate ice-cream. I can do that because I learned my body and learned how to stay in shape an easy way. Easter Lilies, and the Number One Gardening Question Right Now

By Doug Green Everybody asks about Easter lilies! Can they go outside; can I plant them in my garden? And to this I reply, “Why not?” Like other bulbs, there are two options if you plant your leftover Easter lily bulbs - either they will live and flower for many years (it is perfectly hardy into zone 4) or they will immediately die. If you don’t plant the bulb, it will definitely die. So you have nothing to lose by planting. Once the Easter lily bloom has faded in the house, cut the stem back as far as you can. Grow the plant in a sunny windowsill, keeping it moist (not sopping) and feed weekly with houseplant food. After all danger of frost has passed wherever you live, you can plant it outdoors. Planting outdoors is as easy as digging a hole and planting so that the top of the bulb will be three inches below the surface. Add a shovel of compost and a shovel of peat moss to the planting hole and ensure the soil is well loosened. Remember it is necessary to dig a large enough hole to spread the lily roots out and to ensure it is at least eighteen inches from another plant. Place the bulb in the bottom of the planting hole and backfill the soil up to the neck of the bulb do not cover the green leaves. Covering the green leaves at this time could rot them. Wait until the leaves have turned yellow and faded before totally filling in the hole. After you’ve planted the bulb, water it thoroughly. Carefully water and turn the area into a mudhole so no air spaces are left around the bulb.The original foliage may die back immediately after planting. If this happens, cut the foliage right back to the bulb and then backfill the hole. Do not be surprised to see a new set of leaves emerge from the hole. Water thoroughly after backfilling. The key to success with growing Easter lilies is to give the tops full sun but to shade the roots. Hot tops and cold feet would describe this growing condition. Also, excellent drainage is essential for bulb success. Poor drainage or clay soils will rot the bulb over winter because of excessive moisture. Remember the normal time for the lily to bloom is mid-summer. The first planting year you may see a bloom in mid-summer but the likelihood is that the bulb will wait for next year to bloom again. Your job is to grow the bulb. Do not cut off leaves until they are well faded and quite yellow. Do not pin them up so other plants can grow next to the lily. You want those leaves to stretch out and absorb as much sunlight as possible because they are feeding the bulb and making next year’s flower bud. Medical Practice Marketing - All Doctors Need PR

By Scott Lorenz Consumers want the latest style in automobiles, the latest fashions from Paris, and the cutting edge in technology. But patients are gun-shy about embracing experimental medicine or cutting edge technology when it comes to improving their health or enhancing their bodies. Thats why doctors on the cutting edge in their area of specialty need public relations. The message of safety, convenience, and success must be conveyed because medical consumers are much more reluctant to be among the first to accept a new medical technique than are buyers of automobiles, computers, furniture or fashion. Of course, sick people want to be treated with the very latest drug, equipment or method. They just dont want to be the first! And so an innovative doctor introducing new equipment or a new treatment method needs the assistance of a public relations/marketing professional to be successful. No one will agree to eye surgery without being convinced the procedure is absolutely safe. No woman will ever agree to breast augmentation or vaginal rejuvenation without feeling absolutely comfortable about the practitioner. The more sensitive the procedure the greater the need for public relations. It has been my experience that a well-thought out and executed public relations/marketing plan will overcome reluctance by patients to embrace medical innovations. In my practice that certainly has been the case. While working with prominent doctors over the past several years, I have developed successful marketing campaigns for plastic surgery, LASIK surgery, dental surgery, liposuction and BOTOX. Among the most successful methods is to arrange for radio, television and sports personalities to have the surgery or treatment free and then give testimonials on how great this new surgery or treatment has been for them. Ive also arranged for endorsements by popular sports, TV and radio celebrities to help convince customers that it is safe and desirable to use the elective medical procedure. One of my earliest medical clients, who serves as an insightful test case for the theme of this article, is the Windsor Laser Eye Institute (WLEI) founded by Dr. Fouad Tayfour who today is a household name in the Detroit-Windsor market. But when the WLEI became my client Dr. Tayfour was not a household name in Southeast Michigan. The FDA had not yet approved laser eye surgery and so it was only available in Canada. Dr. Tayfour, a pioneer in Canada and the U.S., opened a clinic in Windsor across the river from Detroit. Thus, because of Windsors close proximity to Detroit, Dr. Tayfour wanted to reach out to the Greater Detroit metropolitan area. While there was interest in laser vision as a substitute for prescription glasses or contact lenses, initially there was not a flood of traffic over the Ambassador Bridge to the clinic. People are very sensitive about their eyes and very hesitant about being among the first to embrace this revolutionary approach. What about side effects or complications down the road? How uncomfortable is the procedure? How long will the correction last? Will it damage my eyes? And added to these concerns was the fact that the procedure did not have FDA approval and was not covered by health insurance. One of the first steps was to prepare a set of documents for a press kit to explain what the laser procedure involved, what the benefits were, and facts to overcome concerns about side-effects, pain, discomfort, etc. The press kits were distributed to television, radio and newspaper reporters, and to sports figures, talk show hosts, and other celebrities in the Detroit market. News reports were filed and radio celebrities began talking about this new procedure across the river. Dr. Tayfour then performed the procedure free of charge to sports figures, celebrities, and media personalities who then spread the word further. These well-known and respected celebrities also issued endorsements for laser vision. As part of this campaign I arranged for two laser vision surgical procedures to be televised live, which really had a positive impact on patients! We created a buzz campaign and soon everyone was talking about laser vision and how wonderful it was. The trips became so frequent from Detroit to Windsor that when the immigration officials in the booth asked, Why are you coming to Canada and heard to get laser eye surgery they just waved them on by Dr. Tayfour then launched an intense television advertising campaign that cemented his status as a household word in the region. But the groundwork to that happening was a targeted media campaign and selected endorsements. This was not just a classic textbook approach to media promotion and niche marketing where you tear out a page and cover the bulleted points. The media coverage particularly was successful because I have invested the hard time needed cultivating media contacts and establishing their trust. Now when they get a pitch from me, the editor/reporter trusts me and knows the facts presented will be accurate. If you dont establish the relationship and trust first, your carefully planned press kit when landing on the editors desk will end up in the wastebasket within 20 seconds. PR is not about gloss and glitter; its about relationships and trust. As part of cultivating media relations I regularly attend major media events in New York City where I have face-to-face meetings with journalists, editors, writers and producers from top national magazines, newspapers and radio/TV programs. I have successfully pitched such media outlets as 20/20, Prime Time, CNN, People, Good Morning America, Newsweek, Time Magazine, Dateline NBC, The View, Oprah’s O magazine, Cosmopolitan, Fox News, Good Housekeeping, Newsweek to name a few. The same things that worked for Dr. Tayfour also worked for:  The TLC Laser Eye Centers of Michigan to arrange FOX and ABC TV coverage promote their new Custom LASIK procedure,  Dr. Joseph Berenhotz, Director of the Laser Vaginal Rejuvenation Institute of Michigan promoting a new vaginal laser treatment covered by the Detroit Free Press, NBC and ABC TV in Detroit, and an Indianapolis TV station  To promote Plastic Surgeon Dr. Gregory Roche of Bloomfield, Michigan, when he launched BOTOX in Michigan  Media coverage and advertising for Dr. Fiander of the Farmington Laser Eye Clinic  For laser plastic surgeon Dr. Lawrence Castleman I placed dozens of articles, and arranged TV and radio news coverage, and gained newspaper coverage for everything from Ultrasonic Liposuction to BOTOX for sweating, and hair transplants  Targeted marketing for Cosmetic Surgeon Dr. Michael Gray when he launched an endoscopic breast augmentation program in Michigan  And placed print articles and arranged TV news coverage on dental implants and a tooth friendly Easter Basket for Dr. Timothy Kosinski, DDS (By the way, I never represented two LASIK surgeons or two plastic surgeons at the same time. In addition to PR and marketing campaigns aimed at television, radio, newspapers, professional and trade publications internet marketing is very effectivce. One of the first things I check when meeting with new clients is whether they have a web site and how good it is at marketing their product, service or message. Nine times out of ten one of the first things we schedule is a redesign and revamping of the content to make the web site the viable marketing tool it should be. With that done, I then strategically place electronic press releases and ezine articles on the Internet and employ sound, state-of-the-art search engine techniques and drive traffic to the clients web site. The increased traffic to the newly rejuvenated web site will subsequently result in phone calls or email inquiries to the clients medical practice that then drives new traffic to the medical clinic. Another technique that is key to promoting professionals in the medical fields is to establish the client as an expert in his/her field of specialty. The executive biography included in the press kit is geared toward promoting the clients expertise. I also make sure that the client is listed as an expert in a valuable online expert service. Editors consult this service when looking for experts on developing stories. To gain an interview in a news story as an expert in the field is worth a pot of gold and that makes subscribers to this service, such as my firm, a valuable ally to the media by providing just what they need an expert. A major strategy in establishing a medical professional as an expert is to schedule interviews on television, radio, and radio talk shows. To do this the client must be equipped to deal with the media, and most clients are not skilled in being interviewed. Therefore, while the clients web site is being boosted, and the press kit is being developed, I sign the client up with a well-respected media coach. Media training will give doctors, dentists and surgeons the skills to learn how to use the media, not just to convey their message but to compel people to try the medical procedure or treatment plan. As a marketing expert, I can pitch a doctors story and line up a TV or Radio interview but the author wont be able to amaze listeners and capitalize on the interview without being trained by a media coach Before investing in a PR firm it is prudent to find a PR professional who knows his or her way around the newsroom and has body of work with successful medical placements in all forms of media. When shopping for a PR firm consider the following: Does the firm have a track record of medical and health placements? Does the firm have extensive media contacts and an ongoing relationships? Does the firm have a good reputation with journalists? Are the sample press kits from other medical clients professionally written? At the end of the day, sign up with someone who can demonstrate the results you want.
